One of my own starter motors recently died of this. The motor is a gear-reduction type, which works with three planetary gears. However the outer race for the gears is made of plastic, and sometimes breaks up.
When that happens you get strange noises from the starter, with occasional jamming. Oddly enough it still works a lot of the time! In this case a local reconditioning company were able to supply the part.
The starter motor is a standard Land Rover Discovery or Range Rover item, part number NAD101490. Yes it is made by Bosch. If you know where to get one
it can be had for around £155+VAT brand new outright. Personally I never use exchange units, due to having had loads of problems with them.

Mine is on the way out, too. Julian (Joospeed) is going to fit a new one next week when I have the service done, He is sourcing one that is a higher spec/more powerful than standard, that has been fitted to another car he worked on. Will let you know more details when available, if anyone is interested.

Be especially interested if it doesn't suffer from the "hot non start" problem.
Steveb* - I second that, having been stranded
in the outside lane of the M6 for 20 minutes after 2.5 hours in a jam. With real precision, the old girl stalled just as the jam cleared!
It's not funny is it???
Jools has a good eye for quality gear, so please let us know how you get on (Jools - blatant sales plug opportunity!)

Hi wrinkly
what happened, did you go the relay way ?
Hi David, not sure what has happened yet, Joolz still has the car, as other work is being done (tenderly, lovingly and properly - as is Joolz's way) So I don't expect it back until early next week. Will inform you when car is returned (and after I've done the obligatory blast to make sure everything is ok)
