Thanks PV7998. Your comments are similar to a PH warning of transaction by paypal. I didn't understand that it's possible to have funds transferred into a paypal account and then cancel/withdraw them? PH are quite clear that only do deals with face to face contact. How else would you transfer ownership? Cheers J C.
Deffo a scam. Sign the car over, funds are drawback. No money and no car. Also be wary of texts and e-mails with a special code offering you a guaranteed price when you enter the code into a web site etc. I must have received about a dozen different attempts and scams when I last sold a car. Very sad reflection...
Had the same thing when I was trying to help sell my father in laws Chimaera.
Got an email saying he'd take the car at full asking price but didn't have time to come and see it as he was working abroad. He would transfer the money, an agent would come and get it for him instead. Save to say I stayed well away from that offer!
Funnily enough, got near on the exact same e-mail when I was trying to sell my car last month.

Thanks for the replies. It is reassuring to know I'm not alone in receiving suspicious buyers e-mails. Sad though, that these 'Pond Life' infect our PH community. How does the scam work though? If the funds are transferred into your paypal account, you then transfer them into your bank account. Can the purchaser then withdrawn the money back after taking your car? Sorry not privy to the workings of the criminal mind.Cheers J C.
Paypal allows the funds to be clawed back under certain circumstances, say of the seller claims they haven't received or are unhappy with the goods, if an account has been hacked or the payment method stolen et al. Paypal and Ebay don't like to lose out on money, so take it back off you instead. By the time you realise, your car is on its way in a container to so far off part of the world...
Stumbled on this, and would just like to chime in. While there are lots of scams going on, please don't discount the possibility of an overseas sale. I am working abroad and I have bought a couple of cars from the UK since moving to the US. It should be easy to distinguish a genuine person from a scam - a tonne of questions, a bit of haggling, flexible on how to pay with confidence, and maybe a cheeky request to have you take the car to the port. In this economy, you may find that your best option is to market overseas, especially Canada if it is more than 15 years old.
Good luck, and don't fall for the scams!

I've had similar experience too.. If he's really serious he can transfer funds to the agent, who can then turn up with cash....
I've sold a car abroad, buyer transferred me a deposit by electronic transfer, his agent who picked the car up then paid me the ballance in cash...
Any doubt walk away, better not to sell than to end up with no car and no cash....
Good luck with it.

More than this I would go with them to the bank and pay the cash in. If its a large sum they will shove it through a counting machine which also checks for fake notes.I've sold a car abroad, buyer transferred me a deposit by electronic transfer, his agent who picked the car up then paid me the ballance in cash...

Take the V5 with you and sign it over there and then and hand over the keys in the bank.
Anyone who is not happy with this or comes out with the usual BS about not being able to come in banking hours etc - beware.
We are not talking about bangers worth a few hundred quid, so I would be very suspect of anyone who is about to spend several thousand pounds on a car but can't take and afternoon or day off to complete the transaction.

Ignore it at your peril

Another safe way to make or receive a payment is a proper internet bank transfer (not Paypal or Western Union).
When I bought mine I sat in the vendor's kitchen and transferred the funds from my HSBC account to his HSBC account, both of us using the same bank helped.
As soon as he observed the money hit his account about 60 seconds after I'd sent it, he handed me the keys.
Very simple & safe for both parties and all done sat in the kitchen of the property the car had been registered at for a number of years.
Ideally Vendor & Buyer should always do business face to face at the property of the vendor, or get a bank to accept the cash & put it in your account before you hand over the keys.

BACS transfers can actually be reversed within 24 hours. It is for you to judge the purchaser. At the end of the day, cash is king!As soon as he observed the money hit his account about 60 seconds after I'd sent it, he handed me the keys.
I realise it is probably a scam BUT
I bought my Z28 IROC sight unseen and paid by Paypal and then had a courier firm pick the car up and bring it to me.
In fact I bought my current Chim sight unseen and paid by Paypal, but at least this time I took the trouble to travel up to pick it up.
They aren't always scams but I do understand your reluctance...

I sold a previous Subaru to a dealer. We agreed we would go to the bank together - he withdrew the funds in cash - I paid the cash into my account. No actual cash ever crossed the counter.
This does assume the bank concerned will permit cash payments to your account if you are with a different bank but the simple answer to that is ask the buyer which bank they use and ring the local branch.
