Assuming it is a serpentine engine:

cheers for that, its does lack a bit of specifications details, is it sensible to fit a 100 amp, I believe the OEM was 65 amp ?

I stand to be corrected but I believe that the pre-serp was 65A. Just been out and had a look at my car and it has a 100A one fitted.

Pre-serp should be 65A, serp should be 100A IIRC

How much volts should a new alternator provide, even when the lights and the fans are on?

For some reason the figure of 13.8 volts sticks in my head from somewhere...

I got mine from here. They armour plate and prep security vehicles so sell on the components from the new vehicles they obtain. It also has the right pulley fitted for the Serp engine and is a direct replacement.

Alternator arrived, beautifully packaged, very quick too, genuine Land Rover Magneti Marrelli part.

Fitted in 1/2 an hour and throws out 14.6 volts under full load at tickover (800 rpm)

HOWEVER: turned out the problem was a dud battery, so I tested the old alternator and it too puts out 14.6 volts under full load.

New battery fitted as well so all is sorted. shouldn't need to worry about those two for a while to come them.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions and cheers Chris, nice recommendation.

Where did you measure the voltage? Alternator/battery/RoverGauge?

used a multimeter, black cable to earth (ie body of the alternator) and red cable on to the large screw terminal that the main alternator wire (heavy brown wire) is connected too. (under the plastic shroud that protects the back of the alternator) With engine off I'm getting 12.5 volts (ie the battery is kicking out 12.5 volts) when the engine is running then the meter shows 14.6 which is what the alternator is kicking out.

I replaced battery and alternator at the same time. However, my battery was also 'blown' and I wanted to make sure the alternator wasn't intermittently faulty and over charging as I didn't fancy damaging a second battery.
