My drive belt loves to squeak.

It squeaked itself through last year until I changed it last summer.
That solved it all year, until I put it away over winter.

Now I start the car, after winter hibernation (outside under a cover), and it's at it again!
How long should a belt last without starting to glaze / squeak?

Is the best cure just a new belt every year??!?
Is there a tensioner that should have been replaced that could cause this?
Or should it tension itself properly?

Where is the best place to buy a new belt?
Is there a standard part number that I can plug into eBay and get a Land Rover one?

100k miles and I haven't changed mine, though it's possible it got changed as a service item at some point without me being aware of it, but not in the last 6-7 years.

Had a tensioner seize about 5 years ago, flipped the belt off and had to call the RAC for a ride home.
Replaced tensioner, and reused the old belt (still keeping the new belt in the boot as a spare).

Had a squeak with a slight slippage once that I put down to a stray drop of oil.
The application of a little Dove soap cured it (I don't think the soap brand is critical smile).

Good luck finding the cause and fixing it.

So these sneaky talcum powder, soap tricks - do I just rub said item into the underside of the belt?
Ie. grooved side, where it contacts the pulleys?

Don't know if it's the same thing but mine whistles rather than squeals until a mile or two down the road when it's warming up. Always thought it was the belt but never really sure.

That's what I did, yes.
Instant squeak killer (in my case).

Not that I feel the need to defend my choice in soap brand smile but actually it was the only soap being sold in that particular Tesco petrol station on that Sunday afternoon.
The soap is still in the 'bag of tricks' that lives (and grows) in the boot of the car.

Squirt some belt dressing on it. I had this problem on a nissan patrol and a quick squirt of belt dressing every couple of months fixed it. Some people think it makes the belts last longer too as it keeps them more supple.

I can confirm that talcum powder under the belt (side with grooves) has cured the squeek!

Happy days!
