Low RPM 'stutter'
Discussion
Just been out (in the rain, soddit) to do a 50 mile roundtrip (in order to try & get some charge into the battery - as per my recent posts).
A nice (but slow; A281 traffic!) round trip from Horsham out to David Batty's place by Puttenham,to do a recce.
(Lovely Maserati Merak Dave!)
The Chim seems to have developed a 'stutter' though (that's what I can best describe it as). It doesn't happen with anything like a decent application of power but when burbling along in traffic, when passing through 1,900 - 2,000 rpm there is this momentary 'stutter'.
Quite annoying!
Does anyone else experience this?
Is something about to develop into a bigger problem??
Any ideas/input gratefully received, as ever!

There was a thread on this a while back with several of us complaining of your problem.
It seems to be the vacuum advance pump (on the distributer housing - looks like a little flying saucer) that often plays up and can be replaced for about £50. This causes the stutter if knackered at around 1900 to 2000 rpm and a way to get round it (without replacing the pump) is to disconnect the pipe that goes into the pump and into the top of the Plenum chamber. Block the Plenum end with some tape and leave the other end open.
This is a relatively common problem and is dealt with in the bible. Taking the pipe off does not do any damage and is only there to help with motorway fuel economy for example.
I did this with ours and the difference was immediate with no stuttering and with the car far easier to drive smoothly. The good thing is you can try it and if it doesn`t cure it, just put the pipe back on - makes sure you put it on the same way though as it has a one way valve built in!

ObiWon,
No, the Merak did not appear to be for sale. The guy at the garage next door said it was Dave's own motor. It was in concours condition.
I had the same problems with footballers when I did a Google search on DB! He does not have a website is transpires.
His workshop had some 6 Tiv's in it. A Grif, a Tuscan, Chim's and a Cerbie. The guy is obviously busy (and closed on Saturday)!
I look forward to hearing the prognosis on your similar problem, post-service tomorrow.
Must admit, I've not had the car out since, so I have not had a chance to try out Ian's solution yet.
