How many diff bushes are there?

I have had Rear upper diff bush & 2 front diff bushes replaced in the past but are there others?

Also, how long (in mileage or time) is reasonable to expect them to last?

Thanks.

Yep 3, had mine done last year and all well, if you still have sloppy drive train I put it down to bit of slack in engine to gearbox, prop to diff, diff to drive shafts etc, the old parts arn't so tight in tolerance, even new there's play in there I bet.

Ok, thats what i thought. Looks like I could be in for an interesting chat with the garage who allegedly changed the bushes 2yrs, 5500 miles ago as now my car is at a different garage to replace the snapped steering arm I had on Sunday and they have flagged up that the upper diff bush needs replacing. Either I'm unlucky with the part they fitted and it has split already or they didn't change the hard to get to one!

Have you had your outriggers done? Will you be doing them soon? If so the Diff bushes ate much cheaper to change when the body is off. My bushes needed doing as we'll as manifold gaskets, but getting these done as part of a body off outriggers change was much more economical in my man maths biggrin

Just my 2p worth..

My outriggers were done at the same time as the diff bushes so already done along with lots of other items which fitted in with man maths! smile

Tim, diff bushes last a loooong time.

Either they didn't replace it, (and it is a pig) or possibly the diff bracket which retains the bush has become loose.

Mine was loose and even tightening that up to about 30 ftlbs is a mission!

Hi Tim byebye your diff bush has failed prematurely I would say they should last a lot longer than this frown that steering arm is a puzzle though scratchchin poor pattern part methinks yes Thanks again for the track sticker beer

Hi Tim, With reference to your steering arm just shearing like it did, I spoke to a friend and he wondered if the tracking has been adjusted recently and the arm was siezed so they "warmed" it which may have made it britle or forced it and it twisted slightly. Glad you got back ok, and good luck with your diff bush.

I dont reckon Jamie scratchchin I couldn't see any signs of bluing or discoloration and doubt even heating up the TRE the heat transfer would be sufficient to do this kind of damage anyway frown that was good old metal fatigue IMO I wouldn't mind but looking at the offending part it looked like it had been fitted since day dot I hope I am right it assuming this is a pattern part defect as seeing this kind of failure is scary st yikes just glad Tim had the failure like he did rather than on the 25 or at speed etc eek hello Jamie wavey

Hi Simon, It was only a suggestion as I was chatting with him at work yesterday and I didn't see the broken arm. Yeah it was lucky it went when it did and not at the start of the hill or on the way home as you say, I don't even want to think about that. Hope the CRV crank seal went/goes ok and also Peters crucifix is problem free, Say Hi to Peter when you see him and will see you on Monday at the Grasshopper,
Take care
Jamie
sorry Tim for the Hijack smile

No tracking adjustments made for 2 years, I believe the steering arm/track rod is original, the rack has been off the car a few times for rebuilds but last time was a few years ago and they didnt replace the steering arms.

Will try and get Top Cats to hold onto the part after it is changed so I can have a proper look! No one I have spoken to has ever heard of this problem happening! As said, good job it happened when and where it did! Thanks for the help on the day! At least I saved some fuel by not driving home!

As for the diff bush, I will see what Top Cats reckon about whether it was not changed or has had a very premature failure then decide what to do about speaking to the garage that did the original job when the body was off.

Had update from TopCats, when they had a closer look it was the brackets/bolts that had come nearly undone and needed tightening up, diff only just held up! So the bushes are hopefully going to be ok for a while longer! Phew!

Hearing pf snapped steering parts sends a cold shudder down my back. The thought of sitting on the motorway or driving down a country lane and loosing the steering!! Where did yours go?
With regard to diff bushes, Mine is booked in next month as the top one is split, I will certainly be annoyed if the new one only lasts 5k.

Yes, I have power steering. It was the drivers side that snapped close to the steering rack end (I.e. opposite end to track rod end). Will try and get a photo up sometime.

Kerching!

It is really difficult to torque these up with the body off.

I removed my fuel tank, drilled through the rear bulkhead, locktighted the 4 bolts and torqued em up, they obviously didn't!
