Cooling fans not working
Discussion
And the next problem is........
.......fans not working.
1999 car.
Drove 8 miles today, temperature gauge went over 100. Stopped the car, turned on the ignition, no fans.
Pulled away the carpet, pulled out the ECU etc, so which fuse(s) is it?
Handbook out, it helpfully says I have the 6/5 asymmetrical relay layout.......b
ks.
I have the normal 6/6 layout.
Fuses 1, 3 and 19 all fine. Got the bible out, those are the normal suspects.
Suggestions please?
Next problem.....
On pulling the ECU out of the way, I noticed the bottom back corner was sticky. Investigated where it had sat, battery acid on the floor. Could this be as a result of the engine getting hot? Car still starts fine. Are the two issues linked?

For the fans...... follow the wire from each fan until you come to a plastic connector, one for each fan. .......fans not working.

Remove the bullet connectors and thoroughly clean and copper grease each one and replace the wires.
Now pull the 2 spades off the otter switch, which is located on the bottom of the swirl tank.
Use a short piece of wire and connect the 2 spades. Turn on the ignition only, dont start the engine, and the fans should run.
If successful now replace the wires on the otter switch and start the car and let the temp rise to around the 90 mark and the fans should kick in.
If they dont you need to replace the otter switch.
2nd problem with the leaking battery is just coincidence, it has absolutely nothing to do with the engine getting hot.
Check the connections at the fans are good.
The otter switch can be tempramental. Try shorting it out, join the two connectors on it together. If the fans then come on you have a dodgy otter switch. If you are relying on the otter to control the fans put an override switch on so you can control them yourself.

Thanks guys, and particularly Peter, who has been helping me by text. Despite this, he doesn't know where I have put my multimeter!!
We have a resolution. At least one fan connection may have been faulty, but the otter switch is definitely Tarka Dahl..... I got the car up over 90 degrees, nothing, shorted out the otter switch with a screwdriver across the otter switch terminals, fans came on. So fans and fuses ok, otter Tarka'd.
Alun, the liquid was definitely acid - I tasted it. Neutralised it with NaHCO3. Washed it all away. Will find my multimeter tomorrow and test for the alternator overcharging the battery, then get the battery checked for cracks if battery charging is normal.

Anthony is your battery in it's box or sitting free! I can't imagine it would crack over bumps etc, multi meters, I bought one never got to use it as it was always lost! I'm sure my brother robbed it!
Goodluck sir.
Your chemistry seems well in order anyways, lol.
In its box, so I will check how the alternator is performing tomorrow. Sure I can find that pesky multimeter if i try harder. Now I need to source Tarka. Goodluck sir.

Thanks Rigga, that's a great list. I am being dim, but which one do I want please?
I did a google search and found an older thread, which seems to imply one of the 92-87 degree ones.....is this correct, and if so, which of the many listed?
Or do I play safe, order from TVR Power and wait until the middle of next week?

My local factor has found one that is suitable, which s a Landrover part. Nobody has said that 92-87 is wrong, the alternative is to order the part from Dom, who doesn't say what temp his cuts in/out at. And waste a good driving weekend. Stat opens at 82 degrees, so fans cutting in at 92 and out at 87 would seem sensible.
Thanks for all your help.
