Well set off to classis and sports car show at Tatton park (only in public carpark) traffic nearing Tatton was terrible, sat in near enough stand still traffic for 45minutes with cooling fans cutting in and out temp gauge sat constantly at 90, just as pulling into Tatton and behind another line of cars glance back at gauge that's been sat happily for 45 minutes at 90 suddenly its at 110! pulled into the first grass carpark area I could linked otter switch and cooled it down. My fear is gauge was nudging 120 when I turned it off. Let it cool down topped water back up as it spat some out when I turned it off and linked it out till got back to main road on way home.
All seemed ok on way home just home not done any damage before my week away in it at end of June.

First job tomorrow get an Otter Switch ordered, any suggestions so not to get hammered as usual on such a small part???
Oh and do we think I'm likely to have caused any damage or caused the start of head gasket failure, etc???

I like to keep them running if I manage to get the fans to kick in, if the waters not circulating then you're just cooling the water in the radiator, fingers crossed for you that it didn't hurt anything.

When you have changed the otter fit an over ride switch.

Yes that's exactly what I did until the temp had come down to just under 90. Then left it sat in carpark to cool down while we looked around till later which is when I topped up coolant.

Always thought the override switch was a bit of a bodge around a problem rather than a cure so never bothered before but would have certainly come in handy today.frown

Think of it as a safety net and it begins to make sense, in times of need and all that.

Replace with the 92 degrees on 87 degrees off, the standard one is 95 degrees on 88 degrees off.

They are £12.99 at any motor factor, Cambiare part number VE709069. It's an M22 thread, you need a 30mm socket (deep one is £7.99 at Halfrauds) to do the swap. Have the new switch ready so you don't lose too much water. Just the switch and it's washer, no sealant or PTFE tape, don't over tighten.
Gosh, how do I know all this? Changed mine less than 12 hours ago.......same problem!

.....and when you have done what is a five minute job tops, run the car up to temp and make sure that BOTH fans are working. If only one, check the connectors just below the fans themselves

Picked up the new switch this morning for a grand total of £7, will be slightly longer than 5 minute job though as its due a coolant change anyway so going to flush it out and put in fresh anti-freeze. Then next job will be an over ride switch as a good old fail safe!
