I've taken the Chim for a little spin today. She's been running fine, but cut out a few times when I came to a stand still. It seems as if she idles perfectly, then all of a sudden has a bit of splutter, idles perfectly again and then splutter before cutting out. It starts again immediately afterwards. Any ideas??? Would this be a stepper motor issue or something to do with the coil?

Could be various things.

Go back over everything you have touched recently and check all is fitted correctly.

Did you do the trumpets recently?? consider an air leak, check hoses are secure on the plenum.

Stepper electrical lead connected, vacumm hose off the stepper housing?

again my symptoms rectified by coil and ignition amp.

Will have a look at the hoses later. I had my hand down the back of the plenum yesterday when I was putting the new live feed in. Failing that, should I start looking at the coil?

Unlkikely imo, stick with obvious things that may have been touched.

Mine used to do this.

I just set up the base idle rate and now it never cuts out - however it does very occasionally idle a bit high (1000-1200 rpm as opposed to the normal 800rpm) This is preferable to the cutting out though and rarely happens smile

I'm sure it's stepper motor related.

I've had a look around the hoses attached to the plenum. All connected, with no obvious cracks. I did make a point of checking them before I put them back on. I'll take the stepper motor out tomorrow, re-aseal and then replace, although I did use PTFE tape when I put it back in. scratchchin It runs fine under load, idles okay, but then simply drops off. Would this be effected by timing? I've had the dizzy out a couple of times, but have been carful to mark its position and photograph the direction of the rotor arm. Normally idles fine. What about adjusting the throttle pot?

As for checking everything I touched, well that's pretty much the whole engine, from dizzy to PAS pump.

I have had this my self and have chased it from front to back
Speed transducer then stepper then new stepper then new leads then new coolant censer
Then steps up the chimp of darkness / gas and gave me a link to setup the under bonnet gubings
It turns out to be the TPS it was miles out ended up slotting the fixings to get the right voltage ( the ecu thought the throttle was open and not telling the stepper to do its thing) it has sorted it 99% I would do you the link but I am st a IT and has just taken me 15 mins to do this
The cihimp will be able to give it you
Good look Peter

Cheers Peter. I've had the stepper off when I removed the plenum, so will check it out.

Okay, just a quick update.

Received a phone call from Dave (Andav469) this afternoon who asked me if I sealed the plenum with Hylomar when I put it back on... errr, nope! So i've taken the plenum off and put a generous continuous smear all the way around the base. As it happens, I'm very pleased that I took the plenum off, as it appears that a couple of my trumpets had come loose too, so I took the opportunity to reseat these with plenty of superglue around the edges. They were rock solid by the time I put the plenum back on. I'll give them another hour to cure. Almost divine intervention Dave! I think I'll check them out again in a couple of weeks.

Hopefully this will cure the cutting out if so, looks like you and Phazed were on the right track. Let you know later when I get out for a run!

BTW, how do you get a fine bead of Hylomar? I looks like a pearl necklace by the time I've finished! I've resorted to smearing now!

Pearl necklaceyikes

Back to blue hylomer, cut a small V shape in the end of the plastic nozzle, this should give a nice bead, smearing it on the mating surface is ok as you only need a small amount!

Nope, still cutting out. The revs seem to cycle up and down a two or three times before cutting out. It only seems to happen when it gets warm though.

this is exactly what happened to mine - went through everything suggested - stepper - earths - leaks - all rubbish - was coil and ignition amp.
