In a bit of a fray!
My chim is at a mates after a sunday drive, and the throttle cable has frayed down to the last thread at the throttle end. It will surely snap next time out - feel flippin lucky to have spotted it!
I've tried to bridge the gap with a block connector, but its pretty inaccessible to say the least.

He's got a cycle brake cable lying around so I was going to snip the nipple off and pull the existing cable out from the pedal end. Question is, how long a cable do I need? I'd rather not go gung ho and remove the inner cable, only to find mine is too short and I have to get the thing rescued to the garage!

I have had the repair done a couple of times (roadside).
The best choice I have ever made in that regard was finally having the whole thing replaced with a new one.
Often, if the cable is old enough to be breaking, then the sheath is going to be part of the problem.

Roadside repairs never lasted much more than a year, but the original cable lasted 7 years+.
Better to buy some cable for the purpose as interim solution, and then get a good 6ft of it to be on the safe side.

But IMO get the whole thing changed asap afterwards.
