Pocketed pistons and double valve springs I think are giveaways on the larger engined HC vehicle's, but if the cam has been replaced in its life at some point to anything other than the original, its not a HC anymore (mines not no matter what the Vin plate or Plenum badge still says)
So it isn't to do with compression and is just down to the specific cam used at the factory ?
Is there no sure fire way of telling, I.e. after a vin, model year or they have the serpentine belts or something, we're they available side by side, was it a factory option ?
Apologies for the seven year old barrage of questions.

Yes cam application defined if the car was HC (high cam) and not as commonly thought high compression. ....think it was an option when new to spec the car that way, HC badges being available to stick on plenums may confuse the amount of true HC cars out there, only way of checking would be physical inspection I guess.

^^ +1 ^^ and mine "was" a 1993 pre-serp.
I think anything with HC, unless confirmed by original order receipt and rolling road figure, is just a label on the Plenum, all IMVHO.....8-))
Agreed, just interested what it would take to get a standard 400 near to the output of the HC. If I already have double valve springs and plonk a Typhoon cam in would I be geting close?I think anything with HC, unless confirmed by original order receipt and rolling road figure, is just a label on the Plenum, all IMVHO.....8-))

I have a standard 400 at the mo and about to upgrade the cam to a RealSteel Typhoon. Will that bring my Chim up to a similar spec as the HC? Do I need the ECU remapped ? All advice gratefully received.
To get the most from the cam you'll need it mapped. But it might run ok without.I have that cam in my 3.5 TR7, also running an Offy manifold, lunminitions, Edlebrock 500cfm 4 brl, S1 heads, single silence rally spec exhaust and some big arse works rally spec long tube exhaust headers and upgraded fuel line and pump.
On the rollers it was making approx 220-230hp and about 219lb ft of torque. I'd hope a 4.0 would do a bit more. It's a nice cam, smoothish idle, not too flat in the lower rpms, but really comes on cam about 3500rpm and just wants to scream, very free reving to about 6000rpm or so.

Many thanks. I plan to upgrade to a Canems ECU but will probably need to get divorced before she lets go of the purse strings I have that cam in my 3.5 TR7, also running an Offy manifold, lunminitions, Edlebrock 500cfm 4 brl, S1 heads, single silence rally spec exhaust and some big arse works rally spec long tube exhaust headers and upgraded fuel line and pump.

I have a 4.0HC with factory receipt backup,
Had full rebuild at V8D which amongst other things included new heads and a Stealth Cam.
Am I HC less now then??
But which is the 'lairier' cam? The factory HC or the Stealth?Had full rebuild at V8D which amongst other things included new heads and a Stealth Cam.

I've just put a Stealth in my 450 and would be interested what HP it's likely to be pushing out at the moment. A session on the rollers may be due once its done a couple of thousand miles....

but that is all an over cammed standard engine IMO
it should have come with proper heads and intake mods and it would of then been worth bragging rights like the earlier 400 "250" badged/spec motor
