Some of you may recall that I posted a couple of months back about a graunching when going into 5th gear at highish revs ('94 Chimaera 400).

Turns out I have a worn syncro hub. The dealer says this means a new gearbox is needed, but I can't believe it needs a whole new unit just because one part has failed.

I understand it's not exactly an uncommon TVR problem, so has anyone else managed to get their gearbox fixed, rather than replaced? If so, where did you get it done? Should I be looking at gearbox specialists rather than TVR dealers for the best (and cheapest) solution?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem on an s3 and I'm taking the engine out myself and taking the gearbox to a specialist. They have quoted 100 quid to replace the synchro hubs and 300 to recondition the box should it be needed.

I'd take it to a different dealer or a gearbox specialist.

I heard somewhere that problems occur with the 5th gear because of the pactise of having to select 5th in order to select reverse.I would imagine the gearbox could be repaired but it is probably a lot easier and lucrative for the dealer to install a new box!

The problem is how much does it cost to strip and repair the gearbox as opposed to fitting an exchange one? I would do a lot of ringing round. Tower View have done wonders on repairing/strengthening transmission on both mine and Pete Humphries cars so it is worth giving them a call.

If you do it, worth replacing the clutch if it is worn to save the labour costs all over again.

Cheers chaps.

Useful to know that a repair is feasible, but as you suggest, I'll ring round first to see what's what.

Drop me an e-mail if you would be interested in a number of a bloke in Leicester that re-cons gearboxes. He does it from his garage but is f**king amazing!!!, gave him my clio williams gearbox when it completely messed up, and he completely rebuilt it in a day with new parts where needed, whole lot came to 80 quid. Thrashed it around for 12 months after before selling it and had no problems whatsoever. I know a few car traders in leicester and they all swear by him!!!. Might not be what you are looking for but it could be worth calling him and seeing what he says.
cheers
