Hi chaps.

Would like to replace the the cam in the standard 400 with something from Real Steel only because I have a credit with them for a load of steel rockers I returned unused.
Don't want much more lairyness - and don't want to have to remap the 14CUX.

What would be a good candidate?

Their catalogue is here

Ta!

I used a load of stuff from them, including the Typhoon Cam. I love it, very smooth and got rid of my shunting plus once you're up to 3k-ish and 'on cam' it properly shifts smile

You'll have phazed and db484bhpv8 on in a bit to also recommend it as they both use it, or have used it in the past.

Beware though as some engines may need work doing, there was a similar thread very recently about it - 'Cam change labour costs' I think it was.

Yeah - that's what I'm worried about. Haven't got the ability to start pocketing pistons and fitting uprated valve springs

Need an Out -> In job!

Out of interest - what are specs of the original 400 TVR cam does anyone know?

Bearing in mind, that is just what I've been told. Some folk say that a TVR engine is modified enough to accept it. Someone will be along shortly, who knows about stuff and will share more info.

My 4.6 runs the Typhoon cam.
It also runs the standard 4.0 pistons which do not have the valve cutouts and have a shallower dish and therefore run at a higher compression ratio. There are no issues as the lift and duration on the Typhoon are moderate.
It is an excellent cam IMHO.

Excellent sir thank you

Will a standard 14CUX handle it alright?

Mine runs great on the 14CUX, even with my other mods on top smile

I will add my little knowledge - which as we know is a dangerous thing.
400 and 450 standard heads are 28.5 cc per cylinder I think, 500 are 33cc. So heads off a 400 are interchangeable with a 450, but not with a 500, as they will make the compression ratio too high in the latter.
Pocketed pistons are only needed if you fit a head with bigger valves to get an extra 25-30 bhp., and have a cam that keeps them open when the piston is right at the top of its travel, as I understand it.
I do have a pair of big valve (43/37mm) heads that I will shortly be putting on Classifieds. I bought them to improve my 400 engine, then went 5 litre instead. They were on a 450 that was making 305 bhp.
I was told that those big valve heads would have been ok with my standard 400 engine without pocketing the pistons, sticking with the standard cam.
You really need to check with an expert when you have a spec to discuss. All it costs is a phone call.

When I went to a 5 litre engine, with stage 3 heads and a load of other mods, my TVR guy contacted Mark Adams, who created a chip for the specification for the 14CUX. Not free, but not hugely expensive.

A very well respected TVR engine builder that I used to rebuild my V8S engine told me to send back the cam I bought from real steel - I think it was called hurricane?
Anyway he told me to get the one called stump puller which I would never even have considered due to the name - it sounds like it should be in a tractor.
Let me tell you it was fking awesome - the shove in 3rd gear was incredible.
In 1st and second it lit up the rear tyres very easily, and revved really well.

I don't think it is appropriate to name him on here but PM me if you want to know who it was.

Yep - read the original thread earlier on! We're you running the 14CUX at the time?

Just to reiterate, the Typhoon is an excellent all round cam and I would highly recommend it.

As Derek said, works with flat top 4.0 or 4.6 pistons.

Not needed, shins will do it. I went for them though, may as well, just in case I go mad and want a monster later on biggrin
