Phase 1 - next monday!!
Sports exhaust - Me neighbours

Phase 2 - feb 2005
Nitrons
Braided hoses
Upgrade brakes
Revise music system

Phase 3 - hopefully August 2005
ECU re-mapped
Upgrade air-flow meter
Ridedrive weekend course (after upgrades)
Trackday insurance

Phase 4 - hmmm... date TBD
Upgrade injectors
Carbon trumpets

Am I missing anything? All very exciting, can't wait for Monday!!

Also, is there anyone on here connected to any meets occurring around the Wimbledon/South west London area?
Would be great to meet up with some likeminded enthusers on a sunny Sunday afternoon

Love the sound of that sport exhaust.

My wife (bless her) pointed out that my neighbours will not be best pleased with mine at 5am.

Note to my neighbours. If you hadn't blocked my planning permission I could have built my extension with bigger garage and could have fired up inside instead of out on the drive. Never mind, I shall also give you a toot on the horn as I leave just so you know I'm safely on my way

Talking sports exhausts, which does anyone recomend?

And can you buy the bolt on silencers for track days? (the ones that look terrible, but at least get you on the track).

Heh, looking forward to hearing it, although I guess that means mufflers for trackdays and long journeys??

I think people are talking about the "conversion" rather than an aftermarket exhaust - ie ripping out the baffles. I had mine done and it sounds awesome. The downside is the ability to get it on track (how ridiculous that you can drive past peoples houses but its too loud for a track in the middle of no where )

Mine is knocking out about 127dbs when at high revs, at idle its probably nearer 110dbs so even with bolt on silencers its borderline. Consider that risk first...

ACT sell bolt on silencers, £90 the pair. A number of other places sell them too, marlin etc...

I am at a loss to understand how a louder exhaust, makes the car more 'sporty'. I can understand how any improvement in power, roadholding or handling could be classed as a sports modification, but how can a modification that may in fact have an adverse effect on performance or get you barred from the racetrack be referred to as a sports exhaust?

Can anyone enlighten me?

If you're just making a lot of noise to annoy your neighbours, then chances are payback time will come when you least expect it. The paintwork keyed, dog doos on under your door mirrors, root vegetables rammed up your exhaust pipe etc, etc, etc.

:Harry Enfield: Is that what you want ?, 'cos that's what'll happen ! :Harry Enfield mode off:

Cheers for the advice Shnozz, though I have been assured it will be trackday compliant with silencers.

I'm going for the straight through pipe conversion.

You'll probably want another ECU re-map after the fitting of the injectors and the trumpets, they'll throw the fuel/air mixture right out...

if my neighbours have an issue they can come and tell me. I would be surprised if they were to key the paintwork since they have tiptoed around since they saw me firebreathing in the back garden at the last BBQ i had.

Its referred to as a sports exhaust because its an easy name. A lot of german words end up long because they describe what the item does, so perhaps they would name it a "exhaustwithoutbafflesthatsoundsabitlouder". The English just use "sports".

I wear sports trainers that I dont play sport in. I wear sports tops that I wear when I work on the car. I never saw sporty spice competing in anything other than the minger olympics........you get the point. A stripe down the side of a car can be called a sports stripe, or in fact labelled a "go faster stripe". Ironic perhaps, but a label.

I like the sound. You dont. So you dont have to "convert" it. Great. Free choice is wonderful eh

same as mine then. I would be stunned if the silencers get it to within limits. Who said that? ACT? Can you keep me advised cos I would be interested to invest in the same silencers. Goodwood is likely to be "out" regardless, unless I go to the extra expense of a 5 car day rather than open pit.

Think it's just become a generic term for a non-standard exhaust and if you've ever been to a GP you'll understand why - those boys are LOUD, hence the reference I guess.

And I reckon I put up with enough crap in my street to justify it, nightly car alarms, dog barking from multiple houses in the wee hours, major all night parties, people reversing into it, etc, etc so it'll probably just become part of the ambient background noise ; ) And with one set of neighbours being stone deaf it's possible no-one will actually hear it!

The heavy duty cover should put up sufficient reprisal defense, from all but the most determined...

Just spoken to thames valley, will re-iterate when I see them on Monday. They seemed very confident they could do it...

So, Obi Wan. Does that mean you did or didn't get on the track?

What's the noise limit?

(PS Found a tunnel yesterday. Changed down to third, 5000rpm. You're right, I needed new undies afterward )

Jon,

I'm down in Tooting. If you want to hear the exhaust upgrade before you get it done (just to check) drop me a line via my profile and we can go for a spin down the A3

That's a fair point. How does the exhaust mod square with Plod/MOTs etc?

I posted this on another thread, sorry if I am boring anyone! Mine has the straight through pipes in the silencer, but still retains all 3 cats.

Motorsport Events measured it at 106 dB at 0.5m at 4500rpm, I put the ACT silencers on and they reduced the noise to 98dB in the same conditions.

Measuring devices and methods, and ambient conditions can cause significant differences so these are not absolute figures, just one car on one day.

Don't know why yours is louder than mine Shnozz, maybe we should have a rev-out in a pub carpark one day?

MOT no problem, there is no noise element to the car MOT. I think there is no noise limit for a car in use either (there is for a new car). Bib can do you for the vague "making unnecessary noise", which I guess could come into play if you sit in a residential area at 2am revving your engine for half an hour, sufficiently vague they could do you if you annoy them enough I suppose.

Only been stopped once since mine was done, copper said "sounds great" so thats ok then!

Just my experiences, IMHO only, no cats were hurt in the making of this soundtrack, etc.

never had an issue. People are aware TVRs are loud so usually just get a smile, plod included. Never had an issue with the small front plate to help cooling either, despite the scaremongerers suggesting I would face 18 years behind bars, my car impounded and a sharp pointy thing inserted through a nipple...

MOT fine.

Mine was measuring a maximum of 127 - ie a blip of the throttle for a laugh at pistonfest. The pops and bangs on overun were the main reason why it was measuring so high and we weren't maintaining a constant stream of revs for an accurate track reading. A fellow PHer around the corner has a set of ACT bolt ons that I want to try and borrow at some point to pop down goodwood and get it properly measured. I would expect results to be similar to yours Deeen since its also still got cats in there, despite many local TVR owners thinking it hasnt due to the pops and bangs.
