The easiest things always go a bit wonkey smash

I think that my 400 has had a sump change because the plug bolt is bigger than every socket and spanner than I own, anyone have any ideas what size it is so that I can get a mate to bring me some tools?

Looks like the new bolt I bought might be next to useless to, so I am offering it as a free prize to the person who guesses correctly if they want it wobble

That is the standard sump plug.

Do yourself a favour and order up an Allen head plug.

Much safer as one standard ones have come undone by grounding out!

I talked myself out of using some stilsons on it and will do it next weekend. Dropped it off of the axle stands and then thought that it was sitting a bit high at the front, pushed it down a bit and then figured that it will settle once I take it out.

Now wheres that bottle of oil?

fk it I'm going down the pub drink

That's not what was meant when you were told to get a hydraulic jack.
It was lucky that it didn't split and empty on the driveway.

I used an adjustable spanner on mine and a plastic tub to catch the oil. Needs to go on axle stands though. Doesn't take long to drain, just a pain in the ar5e!

Same here re adjustable tool. But make sure your container of choice is at least 5 l and don't just guesstimate like me unless you want a friction free garage floor! Got to say changing the plugs took a big longer than I thought but then most things are compared to my other car( MGb)

This has turned into the most difficult oil change I've ever done biggrin

The allen key ones sound like a good idea, although googling for it only gives me the steve heath ones and hes no longer trading. Anyone able to supply me with a linky or a part number for either the allen style or the originals, I don't want two sump bolts that don't fit in the hole paperbag

My adjustable spanner wouldn't open big enough to do the job and my only other option was a pair of mole grips. I rarely use adjustables as I prefer to have the proper tools for the job, I was a rubbish boy scout this time though.

Just buy the right socket from Halfrauds tomorrow. It's about sick squid.
Ps I hope the poster who said 29mm is right - my otter switch was 30mm. Might just be worth actually measuring it first.

Mine is definitely 29 mm. You will not get a socket on to it unless you drop the exhaust. Just go and buy a spanner.
