I have a question about a Chimaera. a friend has a Chimaera 500, the car runs perfectly but when he arrive at 4000rpm, the acceleration is cut (like a rev limiter), and he didn't grow at higher revs.

the engine was rebuilt by Austec in 2009 and the car has high power and torque and on the dyno curve, the engine grows at 5800rpm (Pmax).

have you an idea about the origin of the problem ?

- ignition system ?

- camshaft worn ?

if not, the car pulls strong and the engine idling is good, but after 4000rpm, nothing !

thank you for your advices !

It stops at 4000rpm just when the car is driving or when the car is stationary aswell?

If the car is in neutral does it still stop at 4000rpm?

Strange

thank you for answer.

only when the car is driving.

when the car is stationary, on neutral gear, the engine climbs angrily at 5000trs and more.

maybe a speed sensor wrong ?

Is it getting slower to start?
If yes, then check the 100 amp fuse.
Multi meter, set to the 20 volts scale
Engine turned off.
Look at the back of the alternator.
Black plastic cover over the main terminal. Mine has a hole, distributor side.
Red lead through that hole until you feel metal,
Black lead onto body of the alternator, or any other earth.
12.7 volts? 100 amp fuse ok
O volts. 100 amp fuse broken

The 100 amp fuse is between battery and alternator. If broken, you are running on battery. 4000 revs is the engine not being able to go faster because the battery is nearly empty.

the engine starts very well, cold or hot. I don't think it's the 100amp fuse.

If it is only doing it under load (when driving) to me it would suggest that it has a lack of bhp/torque so I would first check all of the servicable items. I would look to see if it had a good strong spark, that the ignition timing is correct and check the air intake.

Does the car smoke from the exhaust from oil or over fuelling, is there any residue on the back of the car?

Worn camshafts will also create a lack of power and rev range, although that does not happen immediately rather over a long period of time. How many miles/kilometers has the car done?

the car has 86000 miles, engine rebuilt at 80000 miles.

I had similar, felt like hitting the rev limiter when pushing on, but building the revs gently it was ok, turn out to be the HT leads, one directly in front of driver to be specific (never sure if that's number 1 or 8) - anyway £25 later and i could give it the full beans again.

In my experience they suffer from the heat. In 13 years I'm on my second replacement set, the last one though had developed a crack around it.
Some people will specify high end leads like Magnecor etc. but the Bosch ones I have seem ok (given the heat/use etc)

Collapsing air intake hose?
