A couple of days ago my temperature gauge stopped working, prior to that all been fine.

Its a 98 Chim 400. Dash Gauge operates off the TVR sender.

Took dash off and checked connections all OK, checked spade connector at sensor end all OK too.

I don't really want to replace stuff willy-nilly so firstly I'd like to check that signal is getting to the gauge, so what readings should I get at the dash gauge end using a test meter when engine is cold and engine is hot ?

I have a length of wire with croc clips either end just divert the earth temporarily to see if you get a reading

As above. Take the lead off the TVR sender in the engine bay and short it to earth somewhere - engine will do. The gauge should jump to maximum straight away if it is working. If so, you need a new sender.

Thanks guys, checked that and gauge doesn't move at all.

So that probably means either
1. Signal isn't getting to the gauge
or
2. The gauge is defunct

What to do now then ?

Find the gauge end of the signal wire and earth that to rule out a break in the cable between gauge and sender.

Ignition should be on to test BTW.

One possibility is that the gauge isn't getting any switched power or the earth is bad so don't necessarily blame the gauge yet.

Great, I'll get the dash top off and try that.
