Hot track evening, noticed dim red light onthe dash about 30 mins from the end. All other gauges ok, car felt fine, thought it might be th sun on the speedo reflecting, so carried on for another 15 laps.
Drove the 44 miles home, light got brighter and brighter. It was the battery warning light.
Tested the alternator etc last night and this morning.
Engine off, last night 11.9 volts, this morning 12.36 at the back of the alternator.
Engine running, at back of alternator this morning I got 11.9 volts, so lower than without the engine running.

I assume my alternator is foo barred.

New one from a TVR parts place is £235 plus VAT and TVR tax. Landrover (Denso) one £135 plus VAT. The one on the car has a Landrover label on it, and is Magnetti Marelli, so I am not being silly.

Questions:

1. Do I just order it and change the alternator, or are there more tests I should do or some smaller part that could be the problem?
2. Is the Denso one going to be suitable (the LR guy said the Global Power one was not worth buying)?
3. Is it worth faffing about trying to fix the old one

I would have said:

1) Yes,
2) There are some going on eBay for about £90 from a company that does armoured vehicles - they've been mentioned on topics here before.
3) No, Just change it. biggrin

(big hugs)

Phil

BTW - I got one from Clevor Trevor for about £120 and it's been fine except that swapping the pulleys over was an absolute biatch until I bought myself a cordless impact wrench. biggrin

QBee, having mine changed as we speak - went for the LR replacement £200 fitted in time for the weekend.
PS - my battery light was only on when the ignition was fully off.

Got dragged in here from "what's new". I had alternator issues on my car (non TVR), I had tried 3 alternators and it still wasn't working. Until someone mentioned the 12v feed it requires. Turns out it needs a trickle to tell the alternator to output the 14v's its meant to.

My alternator has a in and out terminal, I bridged the battery + to the in terminal and then (all 3) alternators chucked out 14v.

I'm sure the new (as far as dammit) original ones from that armoured vehicle company on eBay were only about £90...

...wish I could find their name on here now. frown

The name you are after is "Hobson Industries Limited" ebay name is hobsonind

I've just checked and they don't appear to be showing one at the moment (I bought a AMR4247 (£90 + £10 postage)

It came with the all important pulley already fitted.

All round good item and great trader.

+1. This is where I bought mine. Genuine LR. Cost £100 inc delivery. It also had the correct pulley. However, I've seen other 4247's on Ebay, with the right pulley for the same price.

The Hobson ones are "new" in that they've done delivery miles on vehicles that have gone in to be stripped down to be armoured...

Thanks guys.....ironically, I was at Cadwell Park, less than 10 miles from Hobsons, when the fault first started. Never mind. They are genuine Landrover parts, so I will order one on Monday.

Caught them at work this morning. Ordered for £80 plus delivery plus VAT, total around £106, for a reconditioned one. New would be £200+ from them, over £500 from Landrover, including LR Tax, which seems to be similar to TVR tax.

Just a heads up to check and for what it costs, replace the 100A fuse.
It might have been the case that your 100A fuse failed which would unload the alternator which makes
the output voltage go sky high and then blows the st out of the diode/regulator pack.
Then when you replace it with a new one the same would happen again, just a thought.
Paul.

That's a good thought and thank you, Paul. an easy thing to overlook.

I have checked the 100 amp fuse and it is fine - 12.36 volts at the back of the alternator with the ignition off, and then started the engine and got 11.9 volts at the same place, which suggests alternator, confirmed by a TVR indie. I will find my spare fuses and make the change you suggest, as I have had that fuse blow twice in less than a year.

Drop the alternator into an auto electric repair shop, mine cost £20 to have it checked on their test rig and the voltage regulator/ diode pack changed.

Hobson alternator (original LR kit, refurbished) arrived this morning. I managed to unbolt the old one and fit the new one myself. Small moment of triumph when I fired it up and got 14.2 volts. So thanks for all the help and advice guys.

Fitting an alternator might not seem much to you, but those nuts are in a bloody awkward position and I didn't drop them.

Thanks also to Tescos for the 40 piece Draper smaller socket set I bought a couple of weeks ago for £2, that came in handy for the nuts on the back of the alternator, and to Alex for insisting I bought a set of flexi-head ratchet spanners, they came in really handy for those awkward nuts at the back of the fixing bolts.
