I couldnt when I tried it on mine - far to awkward to get the seal out and press the replacement in without damaging the seal or casing. It was rack out for me Im afraid.

I managed to change the seal on the input shaft without removing the rack but I now understand there are two seals and I only changed the outer one. Removed the leak but it came back as a very very slight weep a year or so later, not bad enough to mean the fluid needed topping up so a success as far as I was concerned.

I'm an expert wink

Remove Y piece and front wheels
Disconnect hoses
Undo the bellows at the rack end on both track rods
Unscrew both track rods with a large spanner, (24mm or summit)
Undo 4 rack mounting bolts
Lift straight out of engine compartment.

1-1 1/2 hours.

Cheers Peter - probably saved me several hours of swearing and getting angry!

While you are at it, change the copper high pressure pipes with braided flex-hoses.
Since you can't easily take the rack out with the pipes still on, it makes the job much easier (I had to resort removing the front ARB links).
I have used www.earls.co.ukbiggrin
