Hello to the R-Reg Chim that I followed briefly down Colwell Road this evening. 
I should have pulled into Birch Services Shell station to say hi, but brain was in neutral - sorry, kicking myself now
Beautiful sounding exhaust (you'd pulled into Colwell Rd before I saw you, I just followed the sound; no doubt what it was
) and fantastic way to pull out of Colwell onto Franklyn/Lewes Road! 
BTW, are you VWing on Sunday?

Guilty as charged m'lud, that was indeed me leaving a bit too much clutch smoke on the junction of the Colwell road! 
Grrrr... sometimes those tyres have too much grip, but anyway, glad you like the exhaust sound, something I'd recommend everyone does, sounds yummy and makes me chuckle when people stop and turn round on the pavement when you go past 
Thought it might have been your good self from some of your posts, like the 'roof down on a bloomin' cold night style' by the way.
Not too sure about the VW run this weekend, the other half is working nights so I'll have a chat with her and see what the score is.

What you mean there's another bit to the roof? I got mine at a discount; it was being sold as a sports car for the summer and a bath for the winter...
Would be great to see you if you can make it. Otherwise, I think there are quite a few PHers in the area who are keen to meet up but can't make VW. So it looks like we'll have to organise a local run in any case!

)I got the exhaust done at Austec, basically it involves opening up the silencer, removing the wadding and replacing the perforated pipes with straight through ones. Sounds much better IMO but some people aren't so keen because they think it develops a hollow sound. Personally I love it, it's set off car alarms and in multi-storey car parks like the Churchill Sq one in Brighton people can hear you for miles.
It's not been a problem at all with regards the MOT, the chaps who were doing the test seemed to quite like it.
Same for the Police too, a while back I was pulling out of a side street onto the main road in Brighton (can't remember the name but it's the dual carriageway with the speed camera on it). There was quite a bit of traffic so I had to pull out quite briskly. I slowed down for the speed camera and then all of a sudden my mirrors were filled with bright blue flashing lights. Uh oh.... We had a bit of a chat but he was pretty cool about it, eventually saying that 'with that kind of exhaust you may attract the wrong sort of attention from us'. Mind you, he then said 'go off and have fun'! On the whole the exhaust gets a lot of good attention, I once even had a bloke stick his phone out his car window whilst we were waiting in a queue, he wanted to record the sound for a ring-tone!!

AND--you don't have to pay Austec prices and drive high miles to get your exhaust modified. The job is not exactly rocket science. I had mine done locally for £120 +VAT. Remove exhaust--degut silencer--replace perforated tubes with straight through (SS tubing £30 slightly smaller diameter to minimise power loss)-reassemble. Easy Peasy. If you find (heaven forbid!) that the straight through is over the top then simply ask for a part of the perforated tubing to be replaced according to your taste.

. By insurance company, it's not like I don't pay them enough as it is ...Nuggs, don't hesitate, get it booked in to Austec pronto! There may be a bit of a wait but that's purely a reflection of how good (and hence popular) they are. The price for doing it is the best I managed to find, and at the time the rear droplink(?) on the suspension needed a bit of a look at. I'd driven over a post and bent it so they kindly took it off and rewelded it gratis. Nice.

Simon, I would do for sure but if I have to find an extra £150 to keep my insurance company happy for having the work done then I'm going to have to give it some more thought and save up some pennies...
you know I'll just by get it done immediately after hearing yours the next time anyway!

My apologies Paul--originally I asked Mole Valley and they quoted me £420 + VAT which is why I had it done locally for £120 + VAT. By the way the SS tubing was included in that price. As an engineer I wonder how you would make optimum allowance for the loss in back pressure---although it is very small in my experience.
