I just need the port opening part on the gasket so I can mark the apertures on an old intake manifold I've picked up as I intend to port it. I've another plenum too, so am going to try and get this bored out too.

Would be very grateful if you're throwing an old one out!

Would it not be better to port it to fit your heads and not the heads on another engine rolleyes

The composite gasket was an exact match for the ports on the heads...

Cheers Peter. Would you let me borrow one? More than happy to return it. I'm sure we'll catch-up some time! I'm happy to cover postage.

exact match?.. i think youll find the odd mm here and there... it would be worth using your and getting it exact... also you'll need to trim a new gasket so why not use that??..

Who's gonna do that for you? As I have a spare that I'm after getting converted.

How do you trim the valley gaskets then? They're wire re-enforced around the port aperture?

Some I'll do myself. I have a die gringer and a set of tungsten carbide bits and am awaiting David Vizards book. As for the trumpet base and manifold, I've had an offer of help to bore them out. I also have a spare plenum and another trumpet base to bore out too. Where are you based?

Although, I'd really like one of those new machined trumpetless bases...

Birmingham ....and funnily enough I have one of those new fancy blended bases, just want a enlarged Plenum.

I'm aiming for a 45mm intake and larger plenum. May consider doing another trumpet base too. Depends how much help I can get with the precision machining.

As for the intake, it is a standard EFI one, so I intend to port and polish it as well. I'll use the old gasket to get it close and then port match when I'm close to putting it onto the car (I don't want the car off the road whilst we have the weather).

I'd ideally like to get the plenum done too and perhaps a little out of the AFM (I believe this can be done)?

Fingers crossed, there is a Chim owner about 12miles away who was an engineering workshop... About 180 miles from Birmingham though!

How much did you shiny new 'plenum' base cost? Have you tried it out yet?

£230 ish as I recall, not fitted it yes as ill do some stuff over winter.

By the way porting your inlet it ok, but don't polish it at all, needs to stay a rough surface to assist if fuel atomization.

I clamped mine down and where possable pushed it into the ports to establish its position. I then removed the manifold with care so it didn't move and pushed the other areas in so I knew what to remove... I then used a Dremal / file and wooden blocks in a vice to hold and trim the port areas.... it's quite amazing how much comes off (or would be restricting the ports if you didnt do it wink )
bit of a PITA to do but well worth it I think smile obviously there will be a step but you want it in the right direction (smaller manifould into bigger ports in the head)...

I had no idea about that! How does that work then? Don't the injectors protrude into manifold inlet just before the head port, after the rough casting of the inlet manifold?

Do you think different gaskets have different apertures? I've had look this morning and some seem larger than others. I got a composite one from Rimmer Bros and the apertures matched the ports on my 500 heads nicely. I gather that they would be quite large on a standard LR. The ports on the metal gaskets seem even larger. I'll check it out though, so thanks for the heads up. I'll port close to the gasket and then port match when I'm ready to fit.
