I never had much luck with mini DV recorders, the one I had used to drop out under hard cornering on track so I bought an SD card type which seems fine for what I do.

any recommendations for these kind of cams ????- we are going on a TVR trip to Switzerland soon and I like the idea of filming a lot of it by having a cam on the windscreen going all the time - so an SD one with a massive card in it sounds good...

Try not to be tempted by the cheap clones on ebay. Mine was junk. Worth spending a bit extra to get a good one IMO. A good SD card rated for video (class 8 IIRC) is often recommended for these as it gives better quality results.

The thing to watch is the sound. The pics will be OK, but the sound will be ropey unless you can get the camera out of any wind source. As an example, an ex-colleage of mine used a camera like this for gettng footage of his heli-snowboarding experience. He ended up adding a musical soundtrack because all there was a horrible bunch of wind noise. Be a shame to have to do that in a TVR...

I got reasonable pictures/videos out of mine but the sound was a bit iffy though.

I found the biggest problem was the battery. When new it was fine. But after a couple of months and then a prolonged period of non use, it was dead! And I mean proper dead. I did try and bodge it to a secondary battery but that didn't work either. now it is just a project in waiting.

just got a Maplin "Action Cam 3" to try - £69 good video but no sound facility(not really an issue for me in open top car)

what mobile phone do you have? Most now record video as well as the cheap camcorders, and you can get so many mounts from eBay that you could give that a try. I've got a HTC One, with a £5 mount from ebay it works great
