is it me ?.......

not really TVR related but .. driving to work and back on the M1 there is a 50 mph average limit for 4 junctions. I drive along with speedo around 55 assuming inaccuracies and so on, yet people fly past me and brake for the cameras, then speed up?. Now I may have an advantage over some being a Scientist and knowing the difference between mean, median and mode ect, but surely people can work out that driving at 70+ between the cameras and doing an emergency stop at the camera won't equal an average of 50 mph............ or am I daft and I could do the same. been winding me up all week!love to know if they get done,, or am I the stupid one for driving at 50 ?, god it is painful..
Drive at or around 50, I have seen what happens to other drivers when on the M1 south bound towards Derby the overhead gantries flash a restricted 50 or 60. The speed cameras then work and flash the speeding cars. The cameras dont work when no limit is flashed up ie 70 mph.
The low flying cars that are piling into the backing up traffic usually get the ticket.

I have pondered on these very pages about this subject. Perhaps not surprisingly, nobody was willing to admit to being caught, so I was still left wondering whether they actually worked or not.
I feel that (if they work at all) very few people must get 'done' by average speed setups. Otherwise it would have filtered into public consciousness that these things should be taken seriously.
Every time I encounter them I stick at 50 and steer clear of the outside lane. I leave that lane to the strange collection of vehicles that think they know better, seemingly convinced that the whole thing is nonsense and the rest of us are losers for falling for it.

I have noticed that on every motorway with average speed cameras and normal ones, that there is always people that fly through them without a care in the world.
If you go through a long section of road works with cameras, you could end up with a ban and hefty fine in less than 10 minutes.
I don't think its worth the risk, the time saved going 10 mph over the limit is minimal over a couple of miles so the gain just isn't worth the risk.
I am sure people think that if they go past a camera at 60 mph and stay at that speed till the next one and then slow down to 40mph the average speed has been 50mph.
I cant do maths and even I can work out average speed

That’s a point I was wondering... if you get caught at the front of an average speed thingy.. and again at the back end of the same controlled speed section... is that twice you get done?.. or just once as it's the same area???..
I do agree with all the above... I'm in the slow lane being pushed along by the wagons.. and people are flying past and slowing up for the cameras?...
What we need is a test pilot

There is a belief, apparently justified (though I can't be bothered to search for the links), that if you change lanes before the cameras, that the cameras are assigned to specific lanes, and therefore only 'track' you if the same/linked 'set' of cameras spot you.
I recall finding what I considered reasonable proof that this was the case only a few years ago. I am not sure if they have fixed this or not.
I know the drivers you mean Robert, and I always think exactly the same; thick driver or stolen car / faked plates (somehow).
I think most often just plain stupid, though you would imagine that if they keep doing it they would eventually get caught so often they couldn't possibly have a licence.
Myself, I have found that [in the other car] setting the cruise control at anywhere from 55-60 has never given me a problem. The speedo in my TVR always proved to be *very* accurate, and so never more than 55 in that.
What I find alomost more distressing, are the people that insist on diving in the outside lane at 45, 'just to be on the safe side', and then brake for every camera as well. grrrrrr

The first camera sets the stopwatch on you, the second one stops it and a computer works out your average speed over that distance. I'd say. It would be nice to know the truth about the lane change thing, I suspect your reg gets read each time no matter what lane you're in.I do agree with all the above... Type approval for the cameras was originally granted on the basis that they are "paired", so if you pass through Camera 1 in Lane 1 it is Camera 2 in Lane 1 that then has to be used for the basis of the average speed calculation.
When first granted it was pointed out that changing lanes meant you "missed" camera 2 lane 1 and instead went through Camera 2 Lane 2 and it was asked if that was a oversight.
The transport minister replied that it would be "unsporting" for someone to do that so he was not concerned.
Type approval has now been revised (according to the manufacturer) so changing lanes no longer works, the trick now is to shadow a lorry so the camera cannot capture your plate..

It's a big topic on bike forums, although as most of these are front facing it doesn't really apply there was a big fuss made over some cameras on one of the best biking road, until it was shown that between camera 1 and 3 there is a B road you can go down that bypasses "2" altogether so they can't actually use the recorded time difference..

It appears this change of use was approved in 2008, and may also impact the requirement to use "paired" cameras.... Bugger..I have a NIP sitting on my desk at the moment for 79 (9mph over) on the A31 from a scamera van ... I forgot that I'd put my front number plate back on.

This is an interesting topic. I presume that most speed cameras have a tolerance of say 8-10%, so if the speed limit is 50mph, you can do 54mph? But on say a really twisty motorway like the M62, the tolerances must be sligtly higher in case you change lanes (take the racing line and shorten the distance you actually drive) rather than staying in the first or third lane. Does anybody know?
I drive lots of different cars and often find the car's speedo under reading compared to my sat nav unit. But what bugs me about average speed cameras, is the people who drive at well below the average speed posted (and more so if they stay in the middle lane....). Are their cars under reading or are they ultra careful?

Yes.. I know that.. but on the M62 there are 5 sets of cameras i think... the question is, can you get caught at the first set and again at the last?.. or is it just classed as one offence??Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

ok i'll do that then, bloody hell!

is for 5 years ,and another two years after it`s gone off your licence
