Hey folks.
I am aiming to get a Chimaera in the 12 months, and I am not a fan of the older door opening systems on the the pre face lift cars, I know I've seen some conversions carried out but typically they can suffer from the filler/fibreglass sinking after a while.
Has anybody had this done and can recommend a good bodyshop and supplier of the needed parts?
It'll open up a few options on cars for me if I am confident in the modification being carried out professionally.

Never seen anyone with a modded entry system? There was more than one "update" which removed the buttons/silver caps before the button under the mirror was fully used?

If you are "carefully" selecting a future Chim, save up and buy the later model?? The costs to convert will more than close the gap in respray costs for both wings etc and on a 10 to 20 year car, you'd be better spraying the whole car - just to remove the push buttons or sliver caps??

So if you're going to modify, most of those TVR specialists who advertise in the TVRCC Magazine (Sprint) will be more than capable - at a cost?

Possibly not the most helpful advise, but buy a later car?

I should clarify, I just wondered about the conversion to the door mirror opening button style.
I am keen to learn peoples opinions of the job as I have a brilliant paint shop at work but am unconvinced by efforts I've seen before by other bodyshops.
I will probably go for a later shape car but I thought in case I see a nice early car in a colour I like I would ask.

it can be done easy enough. Just fit the switch into the mirror and this is powered directly to a solenoid mounted on the door mechanism.
When you lock the car on the standard key fob, it disables the mechanism. So you can still press the wing mirror button, it will activate the solenoid but it will not open the door

Each to their own I guess - I actually like my silver buttons :-) I also like that it'a a mechanical connection and less likely to fail (a bit less likely LOL)

When you look at facelift/pre-facelift you need to be aware that there are crossovers, customers could specify a facelift front, pre-facelift rear and door buttons or mirror opening..

Mine for example is a facelift front, pre-facelift rear and silver buttons..

TVR also had a bit of habit of using whatever they had to hand so there are a few varients out there..

I always think it's an odd way to get into the car with the button under the mirror - sure it looks cool but you have to reach around the door in a bit of an unnatural way whereas the button on the wing is "right" - one hand pops the button and the door opens into the other hand ... I certainly wouldn't want to "convert" mine.

Maybe not Phil, but it's great for teasing passengers....."coming for a ride? Ok, get in then". "where's the dor handle?" and "how do I get out?" " that's for you to work out"

On the 'really' cool ones, the mirror button also pops the boot ;-)

On the really really cool ones, the extra button on the key pops the boot tongue out

Absolutely pointless imho.

The door buttons match the boot hinges and add to the style!

I have both and prefer the earlier style.

indeed mine has facelift front and rear but solid door buttons in the wing... it also has later top dash early radio panel !!!!

one disadvantage of the wing door buttons is they can freeze !

A couple of quick squirts of silicone lube down the button housings in November generally prevents this...

I have a 94 which has the black button with key in the wing. From reading this topic it sounds like you can replace that with just a metal button minus the key? If so that sounds good, any idea where to get them? Thanks

Same here! I have been frozen out once but the buttons under the mirrors seem like a "when" not an "if" they will go wrong.

I've confused myself a few times by trying to open a door with the boot hinge paperbag

So long as you didn't try to climb into the boot and drive from there.....
