Thermostat Replacement

Are there any technos here who could advise on the easiest method of replaceing the thermostat on my 1998, 450 Chim. I've had a look in the Bible but the subject isn't covered.

Try the 2nd Edition of the bible, page 132.

Housing secured by two bolts 8 or 10mm. Remove hose, two bolts and Bobs your Brothers..........

OK drain/collect coolant etc, and ensure you have the correct replacement thermostat 82 degree and a gasket and gasket goo etc...

Mine is pre-serp, and I change stats 71c summer, 82c winter... only depth of swirl tanks differ for this purpose - my LR is serp.

Open swirl tank and syphon out coolant (I alwasy reuse mine - since splashing out on water wetter, red synthetic anti-freeze and distilled water). You may have to do both tanks on serp engine.
Disconnect the hose from the stat housing (its the elbow behind the distributor cap).
Undo both bolts on the elbow.
Pull the elbow away it holds the thermostat.
Clean faces and use new gasket to ensure a seal....
Refill coolant & bleed.
If you have a jiggle pin in stat it goes upward, spring part of stat goes into the engine side of housing.

Thats all I can think of!

Cheers Trev. Except that the dealer has sold me a 74 degree stat. I'll fit it anyway as that has to be better than a stuck open one.

Certainly did, so did you do Winnats pass on the way back. Reason I mentioned the orientation of the stat - in case you dont have one in - 60c is very cold ;-)

Nah, went back through Chesterfield, Chatsworth, Peak Forest, Chapel etc stopping off for Sunday Dinner. With the colder weather, it barely gets over 50c. Fuel bill is getting a bit steep. hey but no hot start problems

Biigger! Just noticed you are putting in 72c stat, mine was cold as hell with one of these, need 82c in winter to get much needed heater effect. Hence reason I change twice a year....
