Can some kind person help me out here?

I've just replaced my dash with a carbon fibre jobby. Everything went fine
until I re-connected the gauges. The fuel gauge now reads full all the time
(low level warning light works though)so I may have re-connected it wrong.

It's a 60mm dia gauge from a 1995 Chim

I've got a Green/Black wire going to the top left terminal (blue spot)
A Black/Red to the top right (black spot)
A Blue wire to the bottom left (yellow spot)
A Green wire to the bottom right (red spot)

The wiring matches to the spots on the sender (which is new) and I've trawled
the net looking for a wiring diagram

Can someone with the same gauge have a look behind it and tell me if it wires
up like mine?

Many thanks

Dave

ps It's not all bad news: I now have dash removal time down to about 15 seconds!

So this is interesting.

I have a 2000 chimaera and the newer instruments do not have a fuel warning light. When it hits 'E' its empty - not 'almost empty', or 'hurry up and sort it out, but 'Empty, I'm stopping now'. Simples.

Does anyone know whether the sender is still there but not wired up? I would quite like a fuel warning light so that I don't have to coast into the petrol station on fumes again.

Just fill up when you reach a quarter of a tank. I have had mine half way between the quarter and empty and it has been fine. I wouldn't let it go much lower though. smile

A couple of piccys of the dash would be good.

Where did you obtain it?

Thanks for your help everyone
My gauge is still not playing ball so maybe I need to get a new gauge.
I'm beginning to think they are all wired up differently or mine
was wired up on a Friday afternoon!

I've posted a picture of my dash. Not very good because the light is getting
bad. Bought off e-bay

Thanks again

Dave

I suspect we used the same guy - I had him custom cut mine for completely new gauges so if I ever get my arse in gear and fit it (need to get new senders) then my "old" fuel gauge (same as yours) would be going spare.

My dash supplier was based in the west midlands -Kidderminster I think.
I had to open up the holes for my 60mm gauges but I was well please
with the dash.

I replaced my sender because one of the spade terminals broke off
leaving me nothing to connect the wire to. I might cut some of the
moulded housing away and see if I can expose enough to make a connection.
Would it be any use to you? - I can post up a photo if you want
Might save you fifty quid!

If you replaced the fuel sender are you sure you have connected the wires correctly at that end. It's the green/black and light green/blue wires that form the main circuit for the fuel gauge needle.
The black/red wire is the low fuel warning light which only activates a circuit when the sender arm moves below a point on the resistance track.
The green wire at the gauge is the ignition 12V, the black wire at the sender with ring terminal is the earth.

Don't bother fitting it Phil, just send it over to me an I'll fit it in my Chim for you... I've got a spare round tuit for that one!

Following on from your post I am pretty sure that two of the wires are in the correct position.
One of these is the black/red low fuel light (which works). The other is the 12v supply.
I've dismantled the old sender and confirmed that the low fuel wire is correctly wired to the sender.
Like you say, the other two wires connect across the resistance coil at the sender. The only option
I have left is to swap these, either at the gauge or the sender. I've done this but with no luck -the
gauge persistently shows a full reading.

Having a look at wiring diagrams on the web it seems that there are two magnetic coils in the gauge
and I now suspect that one of these has stopped working, leaving the active one pulling the needle
to the full position all the time.

I reckon I'll now have to source a replacement gauge

Thanks for all your help chaps

Dave

Hi Dave,

I had the same problem on my 93 Chim, as far as I'm aware it was ETB Instruments who made the early Chim gauges with the black bezel. I phoned them up and asked if they could repair test it, unfortunately, they didn't have any of the gauge components in stock at that time to repair it. I eventually made up a new dash out of alloy and got them to make me the standard 52mm gauges to match the speedometer and the rev counter.

The only downside with the new 52mm fuel gauge is, it doesn't have a low fuel warning light, so I always fill up when it just drops below 1/4 of a tank.

Have you tried any of the TVR breakers yards??

Cheers mate

I've e-mailed Bell Hill Garage near Bath who stock a few bits. Will call them Monday
My low fuel light still works so I will get some warning when I start to run out!

Brilliant help. Thanks. Tried this wiring combination ages ago and it didn't work.
Pulled out sender and did some testing. Found broken fine wire on the rheostat so bodged a solder joint to sort it.
Tried this combination again after checking continuity from back to front.
Works. Brill. Thanks.

And to anyone reading back through this thread, the advice to refill when it gets below 1/4 is well given.
I ran out with the gauge a gnats under 1/4 a while back.
Being alongside 38 tonnes of fun at 70 on the A1 at the time didn't help my trouser colour any.......
