Unfortunately I am going to have to replace the small front number plate on my 2000 Chimaera with a standard version as, today, was pulled over by the men in blue and issued with a ticket :-(

The current plate is stuck on with just a double-sided sticky pad running the whole length of the plate (no screws) but don't think this will be strong enough for a full-sized plate, so will need to resort to screw fitting.

However, the previous owner of the car had the fixing holes filled when the front of the car was re-painted so am not sure whether the self-tapping screws can just be screwed directly into the fibre-glass, or whether some form of plastic rawl-plug type insert is required.

Your thoughts please. If an insert is required, please provide details.

Many thanks in advance.

Two self tappers on the divide In the middle of the grille area. Take it off regularly for track days with no consequences. Just rest the bottom edge of the plate on the bottom lip to take the weight off the screws

Good quality foam double sided tape will hold a plate on if the surfaces are properly clean.

+1, decent tape will hold it on. How long have you had the plate on to get pulled? I used to get a ticket every 6 months for dodgy plates, never used to get any tickets for having no front one at all. I would just pay the £60 a year to have a small plate, i'd only go legal if I was being targeted or was trying to hide something else.

It is not the size of the plate that is illegal it is the size of the letters/numbers. You need to find a maker who will put your reg across on the right side, so you include the BSAU marker, you now have a lopsided plate that you can trim off the excess on the left hand side.

Agreed. It was the size of letters/numbers and the spacing, plus they didn't like the TVR logo down the left hand side... nor the lack of a makers mark.

Oh well.

Thanks for all the comments and help!

Sounds like you've been the victim of a 'boost the stats before the end of the month' day. Of all the unsolved and more serious crimes, this is the way they choose to police. scratchchin

I bought a number plate carrier from Halfords, sprayed it to match the car and used self tappers. Then use Velco to a attach the number plate , so if I want to put my "amusing" number plates on I can, whilst keeping the legal ones in the boot. Double sided tape is bugger to remove.

I just pay the fine every 6-12 months (the normal space between being stopped). I see it as a "tax" so i can have a neater front end (on the car).

I may need to rethink that soon though as after 3 strikes they take the plate off you, hasn't been a problem up until now as it wasn't anything special but I fitted my "TVR" private plate yesterday.. still, that should be OK for 12 months before I am on my third strike smile

The plate i have put on the front is roughly 2/3 size, plenty big enough to read at 20M and i am still going to argue the section 14 toss with them (sometimes it works LOL)

On the Griff I use industrial strength Velcro. Never had a problem at 'ahem' MPH and I keep a fully legal one in the boot in case I meet an arsey copper.

Have just received my fixed penalty notice (FPN) for the number plate offence and the fine is now £100 frown

It seems that many of these FPNs are significantly increasing in value, although to have increased more than three fold in one hit seems a bit OTT. Thought it worth mentioning.

Is it half price if you pay in 14 days?

Unfortunately, no mention of a half price deal in the notice document..

Option to pay by post, phone, or on-line.

I was expecting a fine of £30, so £100 came as quite a shock (which I guess is the intention).

Oh well.

iirc it used to be 60 reduced to 30 if paid within 14 days, been a couple of years since I had a plate ticket though. Might just run with no plate at all if its gone up that much now.

I had a 3/4 size plate and they had no trouble reading it from some distance and issuing a ticket.

PS. I use velcro to fix my plates, front and rear.
