Long Term Storage, Sell or Loan to a friend?
Discussion
I've finally decided "enough is enough" at work and have asked to have my redundancy date brought forward (it's slipped 3 times already and there's no clear end date at the moment).
It has been verbally agreed that they'll pay out and let me go at the end of the month.
I've just had a second interview for a job in Malta (where it has been my ambition to move for quite some time) which could mean I will be moving there at the end of the month.
IF that does pan out (and I am hopeful but realistic) then the chances are that I wouldn't take any of my current vehicles as the import duty is extortionate. It's ~40% of the "Glass's Guide" value.
For the Chim it's much worse though as the CO2 level is so high they would want ~11,000 Euros to register it there, and that's rediculous.
IF this ends up becoming a reality I have to choose between paying that or:
1) Long Term Storage in the UK
2) Selling the Chim
3) Loaning it to a friend to keep it in use
The Malta job is currently a 12 month contract so i could be there a year and then come back so I don't really want to sell if there's a chance i could be back here in a year looking for another one.
I could take the car to Malta and use it for the first 6 months, and then bring it back to the UK and store it/loan it to a friend. In theory if it's been out of Malta for a month i then get another 6 months back there with it so that's probably the best option.
I'd sell the TT, My Victory Vegas and My Fuoco (bikes) and probaly take the new chop I have just bought as the import duty on that is cheaper (1500 Euros).
My concern with the TVR in Malta is that the roads are terrible (make ours look like brand new, well maintained airstrips!) and the sun will bleach the red paint! But on the other hand I can garage it, wax it regularly and replace the suspension when it wears out....
It may well be that I don't get the Malta role, but that's where my heart is so I will be looking for other jobs there - what would you do? Take it or Sell it?

Jules, there's a car storage company near Cambridge that stores cars, keeps them on trickle charge etc. I believe it's around £60-£70 per month. I know a guy at Kerridges (TVR/Noble/MG garage) who stores some of his cars there, including Porsche and Noble, and they have a good reputation. I'm sure they'd be worth talking to.... PM me if you want the contact details...

Wow - that's cheaper than I'd expected. That's actually not bad at all..Chilli

I'll PM you for the details if this pans out and THANKS
Hi Jules, Hope it all works out for you, Im sure you will get many offers to drive your car around for you whilst you are away ( including myself), I don't think you should sell it (unless you feel that you will stay out there or wont drive it again). I know of a very good storage facility and he also a car fanatic and P/H member. His user name is Ironictwist and his firm is garaged.com
His real name is Umair and is a really nice chap.
If you lend it to someone then they are paying to use it, ie, tax, insurance, fuel, servicing and general upkeep so it costs you nothing, I am not meaning they use it as their daily driver but once a week to get rid of the cobwebs.
If you do decide to sell it, I will give you what you paid for it, so you have a year for free. Only joking, Its worth more than that all day long.
Good luck with which ever way you choose, and check in on here from time to time.

Hi Jules
I worked in Malta for 3 years, and you are right about the roads.
That said i drove down to Catania and took the ferry from there taking the car in on a temporary import so had to take it out again within one year.
as i was provided with a hire car while i was there my car was garaged for the duration and not really used. But!! what an absolute terrific drive down the whole length of Italy, i would recommend taking the car just for that experience.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi Jules.
I personally store my TVR and Mini (I have no garage) with a chap near Cambs called Martin. His company is the autocar storage company.
With my referral and if you are moving long term, he will do you a good deal, so ignore the prices on the website.
I can keep an eye on it for you too as I regularly visit Martins to drive my cars and say hello.
He is a great guy and has some seriously nice cars in the store.
He has a couple of rare TVR's there too.
Good luck!
Thanks,
Richard.

Jules, the above is the one that I was referring to and Alex above mentions
Hi Chilli!autostore is a different company to whom I store with: autocar storage co.
Autostore are in Cambridge I believe.
Martins is a lot nearer to me in St Neots.
He has a great set up and is always flexible to when I can use the car.

Thanks Roger, I'd planned to ride down there in May for a long holiday so I have the route already in mind LOL, I might just change it to a drive rather than a ride :-) and do it sooner.I worked in Malta for 3 years, and you are right about the roads.

Did you enjoy your time there? I've been going there 4 or 5 times a year for the past 8 years or so on holiday :-)
Just a note of caution.
I used to live in Cyprus & it sounds like the roads are the same. I had a mate with an MX5 out there that had 1 whole corner of suspension ripped of the car running through a pot hole.
And of course, if you have any faults out there, who will be capable of doing repairs?

I'm fortunate in that over the years I have build a great network of friends out there, most of whom are VERY handy with the spanners and two of whom own custom bike building firms with fantastic workshops.I used to live in Cyprus & it sounds like the roads are the same. Working on the car will be fine, the roads are truly awful but I'm used to driving around the potholes there now :-), it's the road surface just after it's rained (or when the water the roundabouts) that'll make things exciting :-)
