just got home after having chim out ,turned off ignition and the battery light came on ,appears to be discharging the battery rapidly, when fired up again light goes out and battery is charging,i disconnected the alternator and light went out and battery seems to have stopped discharging.no warning of this occuring,is it possible the 100a fuse is gone(have not checked yet)or the alternator has just failed.any help on this would be much appreciated.

Qbee is the master of this one but I think it's the diode pack on the alternator

In the words of Radio 4 "I'm sorry,I haven't a clue". Thanks to jojackson for the build up, but my entire knowledge consists of what I have read on PH and what has gone wrong with Niggles.

Sardonicus is a real expert.

Nice one , is changing the diode pack straightforward , or better opting for replacement alternator ? Alternator does look like the original !

Don't know the answer, but if you are going the alternator replacement route you can get a recon alternator from Hobson Industries in Lincs for £106 delivered. I believe that they are actually new ones that have been changed by Hobson when upgrading Landrovers to military armoured spec. I bought one myself and am very happy with it.

You will need the part number of the alternator when you order - its on the Magnetti Marelli alternator if yours is the same as mine, on a Landrover label

As a confirmed cheap b*st*rd who did this himself some time ago it really isn't worth the grief to strip one down, find that you bought the wrong version of the diode pack and so have to do back and reorder the right one and then hope it all works again ... Fitting a brand new one is so much more pleasant an experience and lets face it you'll never have to do it again! biggrin
