Standard Decat Y piece... thoughts
Discussion
Hi,
I am soon to have my Y piece de-catted - basically it has to come out temporarily to have one with a decent cat fitted to pass an MOT. Whilst it's out I may as well have the glass bashed out.
(Engine is smooth as, new lambadas, new stepper but still failing)
So, I have been told the best router to go would be a 'new chip' a tornado I would imagine... is this the case? - or is this the best option of several ?
Cheers and sorry for my simplicity.

The Tornado is a perfectly good chip, but TVR power have already modified the chip to get the max from the engine. A lot of the gains of the Tornado are over the original Range Rover Map, and these are the ones quoted if you read the Ebay adverts. In your case, just keep the Lambda probes, and stick to the TVR chip and all will be well. Simply removing the cat's dont alter things so much you need a rechip.

So nothing else needs doing? Just the cats out... I would have thought *something* must need doing to take advantage of being de-catted...You make it sound as though neither is a worthwhile venture (cats out or chip)

I decatted mine having checked with Mark Adams first, no changes required. As blitz says, leave the lambdas in to control things. Do remove the precats too. They aren't needed for the MOT.You make it sound as though neither is a worthwhile venture (cats out or chip)
Have you got a good catted Y piece for the MOT? I still have my old one, as I went for Clive's stainless steel sculpture. Lovely sound. And more power, as you will have pulled out the plugs that were blocking the exhaust.

Cool ok - I'll talk to them in the morning and question the need for a chipping.. Austec are gonna lend me the required bits for the MOT - since it seems my cat is not catting so I just mentioned to them that it might as well be knocked through since it's coming off for the purposes of MOT...Have you got a good catted Y piece for the MOT? I am aware of three decatted Y pieces:
Clive Ford's
ACT's
The standard TVR cut open, decatted, and rewelded shut.
They all sound different.
I love the noise of the Clive one, it costs £340, but three clamps and it is job done.
Daz (SillyconeKid) has the ACT one, says he likes the sound.
I have heard it said that due to its shape, the TVR one has all the musical resonance of a dustbin.
Before you rush into it, can I recommend that you blag the use of Austec's one for a week or two and do your research?
Phazed is down your way and is decatted - not sure what version.
You are welcome to have a listen/drive in mine, but I live in Notts
Daz is up this way too
Chilli is decatted, not sure what version.
All of except Daz are at Snetterton for a track day in ten days time (16th) if you fancy a day out and some fun
Or start a thread asking to listen to decatted Y pieces.

I thought about this, having listed to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzPnO9EQnJg I thought I may as well give it a whirl with what's there if it's too ugly I understand they are not too difficult to swap out... But yeah let's see what people have!Clive Ford's

Phazed had the standard Y-piece decatted as far as I'm aware on his 450. I have a standard Y-piece decatted too. I think Jamie has as well. I haven't heard Clive's.
All I can say, is that pre-cats out, main cat out and sleeved… it sounds awesome under load from 2k rpm and damn loud too!!!

On the requirement chipping front by removing the cats, all you are doing is letting the exhaust gas out faster, to reduce the engines pumping losses. You are not changing the engines capacity, cam profile , injectors, fuel pressure, or AFM, that are the major players in the engines fuel map requirements.

Understood. So, since the offer is on the table, so to speak - would the extra outlay on a chip-tune not make any appreciable difference ?The pre-cats made a nice burble but no appreciable performance increase that I could pin down - I did have the heads and valves done too though...
Hi mate, It was good to meet you at the ace café.
Mine is all 3 cats out and sleeved, we will be at the riverview café on Sunday if you fancy a listen.
I really like the noise and the bark at around 3000rpm, I am not sure my neighbours like it!.
I have the standard "Y" piece and the sound is deep and very loud.
I hope you get your MOT ok.
Jamie

Not sure why the car would fail the MOT with the cat. If all is well with the running of the car, them mine passed without the main cat. Have you checked for fault codes?
Beware specialists with the ability to remap talking you into having your car remapped on their rolling road would be my advice. When I worked near Gatwick, my car was not working properly and had no fault codes. I was told that a remap was required. It turned out to be the AFM.
Surrey Rolling road will tell you how the car is fueling under full load and Rover Guage will tell you about fault codes and how the car is coping with life with regards to fueling via long-term and short-term trim.

never in a month of Sundays will an RV8 with no Catalyst's pass a straight MOT unless it's a pre 92ish test/non cat test car
if it does the MOT station's gas analyser is in need of calibration no question

Nope. The only reason to rechip is if the car has a shunting issue at low speed, and switching to a non catalyst fuel map can smooth things out in some cases, but you will need the correct chip. BHP wise, no difference.
