Dumb question first, is the water level ok, including the swirl pot?

The swirl pot is the aluminium vessel with the brass blank in the top, (when cold) check the level there, it should be full, or as near as.

Sounds like possibly low on coolant or an airlock in the system perhaps. As above, start by checking the coolant levels.

Today have put half pint in swirl pot to brim it and filled expansion tank to one inch from top, ran up to temp fans coming on and heater control working fine- cold when closed and heat when opened up, lovely.
Switched off let all go cool, felt expansion tank and its stone cold !! pipe from here going across front of engine bay is warm, is this normal ??

You may find that you get some water out of the exp bottle that full
The bottle will only get warm when the water expands

The standard thermostat opens at 82 degrees, to the water needs to be hot to open the thermostat and circulate the water.
