I've just had my 96 Griff back from its 42,000 mile service at the factory - great job done as usual.

I need a new (manual) steering rack which will work out at about $600 inc VAT and fitting. Alternatively, they can retro fit PAS all in for about $1600 - $1000 extra for PAS, is it worth it and will I get much of it back when I come to sell it?

Any ideas

Cheers

Chris

P.S. I noticed they've lent out a red Tamora as well as the previously used blue Tuscan for the filming of the next series of Footballer's Wives

Steering racks seem to be a sensitive subject to some dealers. My 17 thousand mile Griff 500 (99) was supposed to have a worn rack. Its just sailed through the MOT!

From a TVR source I know the Griff steering racks are allegedly TVR badged Escort MKV racks. These are considerably cheaper than TVR originals. Track rod ends for added interest are from Mk 2 escort.

Would take that with an immence piece of salt. I heard almost every manufacture under the sun as an alledged source for the racks.

I thought the same as Mickygee. However, I read somewhere that TVR build the racks themselves...highly unlikely if you look at the casting.

Anyhow, 600 quid for the "standard" TVR rack and fittings sounds outrageous!

Most of the racks in the UK are made by a couple of companies - Cam Gears is one. TVR have ever since the days of the Wedges bought in basic racks and then modified the internals and in particular rack ratios and the PAS mechanism. This has led many to say it is the same as Ford/Vauxhall/Rover/Peugeot/Lotus etc etc. It may share external components but it is different enough that this is where the compatibility ends.

The goodnews is that in most cases these racks can be re-conned for a couple of hundred ish.
