I only say this, because Dr Who travelled through time, went backwards and forwards, and his mode of transport never changed.... I don't think the Tardis was ever swopped in for a newer model... With each new Doctor, the old police box remained faithful... OK, maybe he made a few upgrades on the way, like satnav, and braking systems, but the original spec didn't wander too far...

This has got me thinking... I bought my first car in 1969, same year I sat up all night and watched Apollo whatever land on the moon... It was front engined, rear wheel drive, very light with a high power to weight ratio. And only two seats. The car, not the Apollo rocket thing.

It didn't have all the extra stuff that todays drivers enjoy, like ABS, traction control, stability control, air bags, climate control, Eco stuff, and God knows what else..

So here I am, nearly 45 years later. I'm driving a front engined, rear wheel drive, very light car with a high power to weight ratio. It doesn't have ABS, traction control, stability control, air bags, climate control, or Eco stuff...

And yet, I travel faster than I did nearly 45 years ago, and still nothing can keep up. Bit like the Tardis really biggrin

Hmmm, me too. Same year. Mine was a '62 MG Midget (at least it seemed faster than anything else...).

My first car in Britain was a near new 1979 MG Midget 1500. Loved it, but sadly written off by thieves, and replaced by a virtually identical 1980 version (still in the stable).

The '79 was actually quite quick with a Tony Price built short block, Peter Burgess head, tubular manifold, producing 95+ hp at the rear wheels.

Prior to that a 'small' Oldsmobile with a Chevy 454 putting out in the region of 525HP, and utterly incapable of going around corners.
You didn't drive it; you aimed it, pressed the throttle (instantly spending $15-$20 on rubber) and prayed.
Much the way I drive my TVR today actually.

My first car in 71 wasn't so much a tardis, more of a piece of st!

1960 Austin 1100 with brakes sooo bad that if we were 5 up, I had to use both feet on the brake pedal yikes

Is that OT?

My first car....1959 Frogeye Sprite purchased in 1978 for £200, bit of a rust bucket and not that fast with a 948cc engine! But when I think back it just might be the most fun car I've ever had...maybe.

Roads were so much more fun to drive back then, less congestion and fewer restrictions/cameras.

Mine was a 1966 Mini 850 bought for me by my Dad for passing my test in 1977. It cost £260. You could see the ground go by through the holes on the floor. It was the first car in the family so we were clueless. Nicked and written off within the year.

Mine was a '67 Ford Anglia 1200 'super' [don't you know hehe]
I saved up 80 quid to buy it when I passed my test in '76. It wasn't long before the rear leaf springs appeared INSIDE the boot, and once when slammed the drivers door [I had to to get it to close] most of the sill fell off with newspaper and filler!

Hmmm ... started in a 1.3 Mk2 Escort Ghia (TKW 703S) and currently in the Chim.

So yes, started out in rear wheel drive (OK - so with sod all power) and ended up in rear wheel drive (which, compared to you guys, still has sod all power) ... Just pass me a couple of loops of your long scarf Chilli! hehe

Mine will sound less impressive. smile My first car was a 1986 Fiesta 950cc popular plus, bought for £500 in 1996. Bought the Chim in 2002 aged 23 as I had always wanted one. Still got her now and firmly part of the family. smile

I still have the same car I passed my test in! (and I'll be 50 in a couple of weeks time). Not sure whether that's time lord or Groundhog Day, but I wouldn't swap!

Well, I have to admit, I still have mine, or rather my father is still storing it for me.
It was my mothers until I 'dented' the door, then I was 'offered' the chance to buy it smile
