Hi, new to Chim ownership and just in the middle of replacing a rear wheel bearing and have successfully removed the hub from the carrier using the following setup..

However am left with the outer bearing....

I can get a puller on the bearing, but it just pulls the cage off and there is then nothing to get behind on the remaining race.

Before I get the angle grinder out to split the race, is there any other techniques you guys have used?

Cheers Pete

I have pondered this very question many times over the years and tried various approaches. What I always end up doing is (with the cage and rollers removed) first try a bearing separator on the small lip that is at the bottom of the taper and see if you can press it off with what little attachment you can get there. Secondly if this fails (to be fair it only seems successful about 20% of the time but still worth a try) you will need to cut it off, I use a 1mm cutting disc in a 5" angle grinder and cut a flat parallel to the shaft but be very careful not to cut to deep and stop before you get all the way through then with a small chisel (and safety glasses) break off the piece then drive the chisel into the thin section left behind which should dent it enough to expand the race a little and slide it off. Bearings and their races are case hardened so they can resist wear but also absorb impact without cracking so once you get the hard outer off denting the metal left behind is possible.

Thanks for the reply...I will see If I can catch the edge of the race with a puller...if not some careful work with the angle grinder.
