Are there anything major between the 2 regarding reliability, ease of maintenance, reliability?
Chimp on gas kindly let me know latter has more efficient oil pump.

New to TVR, looking for my 1st so please dont be too harsh.

I'm glad the OP now has all the correct info wink he can now make an informed decision on what's best.

+1 - the serps are the later engines and as such seem to be more "sorted" but otherwise there's not really much between them.

I've got one of these;

http://www.johnealesroverv8.co.uk/3.html

It solves the pre-serpantine oil pump issues & as a by product now have a remote oil filter which makes changing it a doddle.

I honestly wouldn't worry too much. Serp belts are there so you only have one belt driving the accessories, rather than lots of belts.

They do have an improved oil pump setup, but if a vee belt engine is running fine, then there is no probs.

I've heard (don't take my word for it!) that pre-serp is a + 15hp. I have a 4.0 pre-serp with performance cam which has seen off 4.5s... but that's no scientific proof by any measure!

I personally can't think why it'd be more powerful. I can say from experience though that a pre-serp likes to shunt below 2500 rpm. So if you take that route, in town expect a bit of "c'mon let me go!".

With these cars 60 mph on a fast road is very much a jog! bounce

The shunting occurs on every other car... Pre serps, serps, old/new 400-500...

The other thing to remember is its not just the engine that is different with the serp cars. Baring odd crossover cars the serp cars have

Serpentine engine
T 5 gear box
Btr diff
Different interior
Later body with better cooling
Later chassis
Bigger brakes..

I prefer the looks of the serp car

Do excuse me, I was lead to believe pre serps were more prone to shunting at low rpms smile

I prefer the look of the serpentine engine bay
