Hmmm ... dumb question and you're allowed to take the p*ss for my asking but ....

If you're looking at - say - an engine at £4,135 (erm - completely random cost, honest!) that is listed as "Exchange item required, Outright surcharge: £450.00" then is the price you pay £4,135 + £450 (and then you get your £450 back) or is that the price you pay and you get £450 of that back (so paying £3,685) once you get your engine to them?

Yep, I'd agree with that, you pay £4585 and get £450 refunded on giving them your old engine ( in reconditionable condition, no rods out the side of the block wink )

I'd say £4135.00 is the price exchange + £450-00 if you haven't an exchange motta.

Yup - would seem reasonable...

Can't believe that a "scrapper" 5 litre is going from one of the usual suspects on eBay for £4k!!!

I bought my 5.0 a couple of years ago from a private seller for £2K and it had been up for sale for a while.

That was fully dressed as well!

Hopefully I can get mine up to Lloyds between Xmas and New Year and see what they reckon's broken but given the amount of smoke I reckon that I've lost one or more rings (so probably knackered the bores too) so I'm already looking for possible ways forward ...

Toying with the idea of:

1) Spanking what's left of my savings and buying a 4.6 "Warrior" long engine. (I didn't really want to save for a deposit on a house after all.)

2) Buying a 4.6 short block (for about half the price of 1) and getting that built up with my existing heads and ancillaries - might not actually work out that much cheaper though than 1) when the labour's costed in.

I guess I should take the opportunity to get the gearbox rebuilt too as the 2nd to 3rd synchro has been fooked since I bought it. biggrin

There's a fire damaged 4.0 from one of the usual suspects for under a grand and I don't need any of the melty bits but that would obviously need stripping down and you have no idea what condition it's really in ...

I have an offer of a Landie as a "loaner" from a friend but it needs a radiator fitting, taxing, insuring and MOTing but it'd take the immediate pressure off as far as getting the Tiv fixed...

Phil, dont condemn it just yet.

For example you'd be amazed at the smoke an engine will make if there's a blockage in the crank case breathing system.

I've seen one engine go from terminal smoke machine that we daren't drive on the road, to being quite normal again.

All caused by a collapsed engine breather pipe.

Check it yes

My fingers are crossed for you mate.

Phil, you sure you've not developed a leak and it's dripping onto the exhaust?

I may of course be putting the cart before the horse and maybe when they look at it it won't be anything too bad (would be nice) but I doubt it - I think something is majorly shot to get *THAT* much blue smoke plus she really didn't want to restart ... or tick over...

Now you see I think we've all wondered about putting the AJP8 into a Chim (I know that it has been done) and I think the results would be spectacular (as well as "keeping it TVR") ... but I know that it would cripple me financially to do that as there's no way I have the time, facilities or ability to do it myself.

Plus there's a part of me that can't help feeling that it would be the automotive equivalent of knowing that your pet Rottwieller can be told to "sit" and then balance a Cadbury's chocolate button on its nose until you give the command to eat it, then, extrapolating from that, smearing your genitalia in the juices from the cooking of the Christmas turkey and trying the same "trick" but using your "nearest and dearest" instead of a chocolate to try the same trick and expecting to come away from the experience not singing "Walking In The Air" in the appropriate key...

Oh if they send me away feeling incredibly foolish and with a bill for about £300 for a few hours work and a couple of bits I'll be more than pleased (I remember how much smoke we got out of a 1,300 Crossflow one time when we were suffering with oil foaming and the oil bubbles got sucked back through into the crankcase breather) however I did do about 200 miles on her at the weekend at least one cylinder down so I guess she would have been washing the bores of oil for the whole of that, and I have *NEVER* had a car that has made that much smoke before! (Plus it is running very lumpily and really doesn't want to start or tick over at all)

I'm pretty sure that it's not just dripping onto the exhaust as it's belching out of the actual tailpipes rather than from under the bonnet ...

I had a chat with Dan at Lloyds yesterday evening and I've got to try to get it over to them on the 30th or the 31st so lets see what they say. biggrin

4.6, 323 horses & 350 torques. Probably worth about £3k as all new including a set of Robs £1800 stage 4 heads.
