Morgan engine???
Discussion
I have noticed that the engine number on my 4.0 Chimaera is 47A05473B and CR 9.35:1. (Rimmer Bros states this as a Morgan engine). The V5 for my car states the engine number as 37A40P4186 (Rimmer Bros states this as a TVR 4.0 with a CR 9.80:1).
So, at some time the engine has been changed....
My question is what is the power difference between the 4.0 Morgan engine and a 4.0 Chimaera engine??

No info on 4.5l engines - or are they re-bored 3.9s?
Re stroked.IMO 4.5 is a restroked 3.9, 4.6(450) is a different beast (Larger mains & bigends, completely different block / crank / rods / pistons...)
TVR 4.5's are very rare & desirable eg only a few big wedges, special Griffs & Tuscan racers? 450 is just the TVR version of the LR 4.6, and not to be confused with the 4.5.
How this fits in with Morgan I have no idea, but ISTR Dom built (at least some) engines for Morgan.

No the engine won't have been changed. TVR bought engines directly from Rover but didn't have blocks built especially for them so Rover supplied blocks similar in specification to that required which variously was Morgan, Rover or LR (I believe in some cases)So, at some time the engine has been changed....

Didn't a lot of the TVR V8 engines have two engine numbers?
My old precat Griff certainly did, the original manufacturers number and then TVR's number over the top...
This is correct if you look at the block you will probably find the TVR engine number stamped either over the original number as suggested above or in another location. My old precat Griff certainly did, the original manufacturers number and then TVR's number over the top...
I understand that Dom still has the records for the engines built by TVR Power.
I'm so glad I read this thread! While I was changing the exhaust manifold gaskets over the Xmas hols, I cleaned and checked the engine number. My heart did flutter a bit when I noticed it did not match the one on the VIN plate! Went online and also thought that the engine had been changed after finding it is listed as a Morgan one.
Just got in from the garage after finding the number on the front of the block which matches the VIN and V5. This has just made my day!

Holy Thread Resurrection Batman!
I am selling my 1993 Chimaera 400 Pre-Serpentine. The person most likely to buy it has asked me to confirm that the engine number on the engine matches the one that's recorded on the VIN plate, the logbook and the handbook. The latter three all tally.
I have looked at the n/s of the engine next to the dipstick. Well, I've tried to look. There's HT leads and manifolds and rocker covers in the way. I can't find the flat bit of block that the engine number is supposedly stamped on. There is, to my mind, no number here.
I've looked at the front of the block between the water pump and the swirl pot. There are numbers here: the neat, etched one is ERR4602 which is the Land Rover part number for the heads. Punched over the top of this is HT26860 (with some numerals looking like upside down alternatives i.e. the 6s are upside-down 9s). I have no idea what this HT number references, I can find no variant of the RV8 to which it applies.
There are apparently some early engines, which I guess mine is on an L-plate '93 car, where the engine number is stamped on a flat near the bell housing.
Before I get manky lying on the ground with the car on the scissor jack and an axle stand and try and find the number near the bell-housing, does anyone have any idea:
a) where the engine number could be other than places mentioned here?
b) what the HT number is?
c) if I will even be able to see the number near the bell-housing with the car jacked up a bit?
Photo here of what I found on the front of the heads:
Many thanks in advance from both me and my potential buyer!

Engine number is normally at the base of the dipstick. ie the dipstick passes through the number.

Steve, cheers, I hadn't heard of that being a place for the engine number to be stamped (or I misconstrued information that said it was there).Steve
I'll have a gander later today and see what I can see.
I should have asked earlier and didn't: can you normally see the engine number by looking into the engine bay from above?
I've tried to look at the base of the dipstick tube, even taking the HT leads off that are either side of it, but the dipstick tube bends around the block and out of sight from above the engine.
I can't see a bloody thing resembling a number anywhere near the dipstick I'm afraid, a bit stuck now.

The engine may be one that Powers worked on when making it a 'TVR' engine and they stamped another number on the engine. Powers had all the build sheets and data for almost all the cars and I'm sure they'll still be in the attic at their place. A phone call might be all it takes to sort this out for you.
