Flat Spot !

Hi,

I've just had some new cams fitted to my car (standard cams) and there now appears to be a real flat spot at around 2500rpm. Its actualy enough to make the car jolt, sounds like its completely missing. Anyone any ideas, I would have thought that changing the cam would mean they would have maped the ecu... (but i'm wondering why it would need remapping if they are standard cams) Is this just a case of needing to do an ECU reset.. (ie. battery disconnect/reconnect)
Anyone any ideas on the mater?

HI if you have had a garage replace the cam they would have done just that remapping the ecu is not a job undertaken by a normal garage and you would have definatley noticed it on your bill
Its much more likely something hasnt been setup properly (ign timing, vacuum leak?)take it back to the garage and they should sort it out

Sounds like the cam hasn't been dialed in, or timed, correctly, having said that what lift/duration spec does the new cam have? There are a lot of RV8 variations out there and all have differing characters from mild to wild, I found 10 on the Kent Cams web site alone! You, or your garage, might have simply chosen an unsuitable varient.

You refer to cams i.e plural, there is only one cam in the RV8, it's an unfeasably large lump of nobbly steel that sits in the centre of the block, so if they've billed you for two I'd start asking questions.

Just reread your posting, is it 2500rpm in any gear? I.e is it engine rev or road speed dependant?

Hi, it seems to happen in any gear. Spoken to the garage and they seemed to think that resetting the ECU should do the trick. I'll get someone to give it a go. I would hope that its unlikely the garage have put in an unsuitable cam as they're a TVR specialist.

Only problem is, I'm 3000miles from the car for the next four months or so. I dropped the car off at the garage before I went and had my father pick it up for me.. so all info ref. the problem is second hand. Luckily the car will be living in a garage with a friend who also has a Chimaera so I'll get him to try the ECU thing for me.

Can't help you with problem but well done on keeping the car - I'd heard that you were thinking of selling when you went across the ocean! Good to hear you still have it- hope it's sorted soon. BTW let me know where you end up when you get back.
