Having not driven the chim since xmas day i went to take her for a run today. Click . No starter. Battery fully charged (accumate) so plenty of power. Fuel pump priming but just a loud click when trying to start.
So the loud click must be the solenoid trying to throw but the starter isnt turning. After about 20 tries it eventually turned and started straight away.
I have the hot start kitted but as it was cold this didnt help.
I am assuming the solenoid is gunged up and not throwing properly so my first thought is fit a new starter then recondition the old one and keep as a spare.
Sound reasonable or could it be something else ?

Seems quite common at the moment, possibly the damp weather taking its toll. I just replaced my starter for the same reason. First thing is the test the solenoid connections, make sure they're getting all the volts from the battery with good clean connections, failing that, remove the starter and clean the motor and solenoid up. Failing that, replace it.
Same problem on the Griff recently - turned out to be the ignition switch - the switch block on the end of the barrel was a bit loose, you could see it move when the key was turned so I suspect the solenoid wasn't getting enough current to pull all the way in. Tightened the whole thing up with a couple of cable ties and seem to have cured it.
Didn't even need to get my white suit dirty
