Hello all..again with another problem..

It has been raining pretty bad recently and my floor mats are getting absolutely soaked. I've removed the car pets and it seems that the transmission tunnel is wet on both sides from the rain, and then it somehow leaks in to my floor and on the driver side was a good 1 inch of water! sponge and bucket indeed.

Can anyone offer me some advice please on what the hell to do smile

Thanks,

Chris

Have a feel underneath the dashboard where the boot release button is. Damp? Throw a load of sikaflex on the seals around the windscreen biggrin

Okay so seal around the windscreen anywhere else? It's not damp where my boot button is, its damp either side of the transmission tunnel and just soaking floors.

Re-treat the roof panel and rear hood with Fabsil.

Open the bonnet and re-seal around the brake master cylinder and various other gubbins in the inner front wing.

Buy a couple of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ThoMar-AIR-DRY-CAR-DEHUM...

If its dripping down the tunnel then it has to be the windscreen seal, can't see where else it would come from. My first stop would be doing the bottom seal, try aiming a hose at it for a while and see if it gets wet in there. If it's wet behind the seats and damp down the side where the seatbelt is it's also leaking through the roof/velcro and if it's wet down the right side of the drivers footwell then the master cylinder etc.

  • it's all just bloody guesswork really hehe

Very hard to totally cure.

Choice number 1 is garage.

Choce number 2 is a cover, the proper Leven one that just covers the hood and windows. A full cover will flap in the wind and scratch the paint. The half cover will deal with all entry points except the brake master cylinder.

Test for that latter leak - after heavy rain go for a drive. If your right ankle suddenly gets a cold bath on the first left hand bend, that's your problem.

However, in your case it sounds like windscreen as stated above.

Start by having a look around the edges of the windscreen for any signs of water behind it. Put some pressure on the edges of the screen with your hand and see if there is anything moving inside, that might help you to narrow down exactly where it is coming in. The rubber seal along the bottom is the normal cause as the water runs down the outside of the screen and then under that seal, but it can come in from anywhere and run down the inside. The bottom seal can be pulled out from a corner and all the way along the screen, then get a knife in there to clean it all up a bit and cut old sealant from the seal and then stick it back in again. You have to do a watertight job with the seal as if the water is coming in through there then it means that the sealant holding the screen down is probably no longer watertight too.

See on this one with water ingress into the bottom of the screen where the seal has failed and it has gone all misty.

And how much sealant there is under the screen without the seal. This means that if it gets in from the sides or top it runs down to the bottom of the screen on the inside and drips through the dashboard.

Use proper windscreen sealant like Sikaflex or you'll be doing it all again biggrin

The misty bit is delamination. Not sure if that is exacerbated by water ingress though.

Strange, just battling the same issue today.

Drivers footwell soaking wet, but no sign of water leaking in anywhere, i.e all side carpets looking dry, door seals working, roof seals working. Turns out that despite looking all sealed tightly, water was pouring in where the brake reservoir wires go into the inner wing. They all looked waterproof, and was hardwork getting the previous silicone off, but by pouring water over the area, I could see it dripping in behind the pedals... Unbelievable how much was coming in through a well silicones tiny wire hole....

Re-siliconed now ready for testing tomorrow, fingers crossed. Carpets drying indoors :-)

That's the issue I have, resulting in wet ankles after a downpour.
