Engine rebuilding at home
Discussion
Hello!
My engine and gearbox are nearly ready to come out
I'm quite confident I have most of the tools to probably strip the RV8 at home. Obviously any machining work will be outsourced.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get the engine rebuilt by someone else but, just out of interest has anybody had any experience with RV8 rebuilding on here? Is it something that the home mechanic with a large garage can tackle with the right tools and professional guidance?
This has all stemmed from the gearbox needing rebuilding, the engine bay heat shielding needing replacing and the manifold gaskets needing doing at the same time. Accidentally ended up getting the engine out
Hopefully a show car engine bay on a car that is driven regularly is what will result!

A bit of inspiration Alex.
Its not quite there yet and the heat shielding is naff but that's the sort of thing you can look forward to Alex.
Re building the engine, if you read up enough I can't see why not but I personally wouldn't do it myself.
It might be a good idea to get the short block re built by someone else then just add the heads etc.
Perfectly easy to rebuild an RV8 at home, I've rebuilt E type, Healey, 911, landrover and MGB engines all at home.
Landrover and 911 both from catastrophic smash ups internally, landrover turbo vanes were mostly in the sump and 911 had a rod poking out of a cylinder, aside from machining its easy.

Its not too difficult. So long as you take your time and are methodical its fairly straight forward if you have a reasonable mechanical knowledge. Take a note of things when you take it apart (timing etc) then just out thibgs back in the same place (dizzy etc) so it'll be as near as dammit right!
Good luck!!
Good luck!!
Alex my engine blew oil allover the place, corrosion was also everywhere.
Ring Tvr Power and thank Dom as his boys did most of what you see there incl re building the engine.
I can't wait to take it out and polish it. Engines,,,,, I love em.
Infact I have to thank someone else on PH for really pissing him off which is why its so fast, lol I am joking honest!!!!
I've had it timed to run on unleaded now so its slower but behaves great in all road conditions and traffic etc. its never missed a beat since the day I got it back some 14 months ago.
As soon as its all finished ill re time it and bang off we go again.
I kinda wanted it to be a daily driver and I do lots of miles at wk ends at burbling speeds so that's why we changed the timing.
Its got so much torque I couldn't pull away without wheelspin.
From now on its my special car so its getting every damn thing I can think of.
Some people think I'm mad I've spent so much money but I'll never sell it so in ten years time it'll all seem cheap by then.
Keep up the good work mate you'll be there before you know it.
What your gonna take pics,,,,,,,,, I'm going outside to polish it again, lol lol lol

I want to take mine out so I can send the block to John Eales before the summer weather kicks in (fingers crossed). I heed to get it balanced and will get it x-bolted at the same time.
If you're going to drop an engine Peter, please let me know. Would really like to see it done.
Take direct to Chesman engineering and cut out the middle man.If you're going to drop an engine Peter, please let me know. Would really like to see it done.

Hi Alex, I'm in Surrey, let me know if you want any advice.
Where abouts are you?

Didnt think Eales still used Chesman?? I know he uses ric wood (cnc heads) for all his heads etc now... Plenty of people around who can balance a rv8 though :-)
Anyone in there the south other than Turner? They quoted a silly price, more than double John Eales.Edited by Chuffmeister on Saturday 1st March 21:13
