I am sure there are plenty of threads relating to this problem but I am going to start another anyways.

Was having a nice ride out with my 4yr old Grandson as co-pilot, we stopped for a short sweetie shop stop, but as we were just off again nothing but clicks from the starter motor.

Knowing I was not going to get it going even if my grandson got out and pushed. A small wait later a very nice man in a yellow van came and after confirming battery was good proceeded to try and get the starter to turn with a large metal bar, the blue smoke emanating from the starter was the sign we both needed it had fried/died/gone to starter motor heaven.

I have looked at the normal suppliers of TVR parts web sites and it seems I can get one for about £115, but I have 2 questions.

1. Being a tight arse (I am a project manager by trade so comes naturally). Is this mostly TVR tax or is there a cheaper alternative (eBay etc.), I don't want to pay over the odds or buy cheap and regret it.

2. I see there is a Hi Torque version available, it seems also at 3X the price, again don't really see the need to spend more than necessary, and my Chim normally starts really well on first turn with no throttle, even if not started for a while. But should I splash out??

Advice please from the revered collective would be appreciated

What year is your car, is it likely to be the original?
I'd go for a standard starter and wrap some heat shield around it.
Regards Alun

Hi Alun it's a 97, sounds like a plan didn't think of any heat shield, the car came with history and receipts but nothing relating to a starter motor so assume its original, saying that most of the receipt are less than 8 years old so don't know beyond that.

Just had a Bosch unit fitted to mine, I thought I had a duff battery, turned over really really slow, sometimes didn't want to turn over at all.... The Bosch starter whizzes the engine over at huge pace, I have a 500 with 10.6:1 CR too so well impressed smile Don't have details with me but Mat at Mat Smith Sportscars supplied and fitted it, I'm sure he'd give you the part number if gave him a bell smile

Is everyone happy the Starter is just a Landover part??

Generally if I search for TVR Chimaera I get prices £114+ If I search landrover or use part numbers I get prices a lot cheaper.

Hi Paul, crickey your good at your job, lol
Your profile pic, I think I've waved to you at that location last summer, I was just arriving as you left.
I often take the dog there for a walk, 20 miles from my place but hey the dog loves going in the Chimi.
Bargain at that price.

Alun quite possibly Avon Dassett is about 15 mins from my house, so often used as a short run or cut through to join the M40 at Gaydon or even take our dogs for a walk (but usually in my estate BMW). But I don't remember seeing another Chim there so maybe you were in a different car.

No actually just speaking to the wife she says she thinks she remembers (I think maybe I'm a goldfish). Wish I had turned round and said hello.. Maybe next time, we aren't actually that far from each other so I am sure when you get yours back on the road we will bump into each other, I was only along the A43 Dunchurch/Rugby area last Saturday in the Chim.

Yes we will, bit despondent today but when she's looking fine ill be wanting to meet as many of us as possible.
As we're all straddling about 3 or 4 counties in our area we could get a good few of us together for some cruises and a pub lunch one sunny Sunday.
About 2016 and I'll be back out again!!!!!!??!
I really hope that's a bad joke.
