My cars recently started missing at high rpm's. Not all the time, and it's only over 5000 rpm.

It has been suggested that a damaged HT lead can cause this scenario.

So today I've been looking at HT leads, I am now confused (I know, that doesn't take much doing).

Is it worth shelling out for Magnecor leads, or are the standard Range Rover ones just as good?

Magnecor look pretty but cost about 3 times that of the standard ones but they last a lot longer. If you are short of the readies... go for the standard ones. They should last 2-3 years at least.

I replaced mine with the Magnecor KV85 Competition 8.5mm silicon leads(i.e.the red ones!)from Tim at ACT.
I can't say that I noticed any performance improvement, but, they are a lot better quality than the standard landrover ones.
Even though they're more expensive,it's cost effective in the long run,as the standard leads soon become brittle and break down and these shouldn't do.

Hi

I went for Magnacore Blue, I felt a step up from the standard ones I had, it idles a lot smoother and has better pick up. I think the old leads were on there way out...

I'd recommend them, plus if they knacker they're guaranteed!

Reviewed the forum on Magnecor leads (£75/95+)and then visited Halfrauds - Rover leads (Halfrauds) at £30, Bosch leads on special at £24. No brainer.

Not sure what the "real" advantages are to a low-ish reving 4-stroke engine. Can't say whether "quality" comes into it - Bosch/Halfrauds are good quality in their own right

Completed 2-track days, never missed a beat, frankly, other than when bonnet is lifted and you "see" Magnecor leads, I don't see the "real" need for the extra cost.

The big issue is heat, TVR engine bay = oven
Although i'm obviously huuuugely biased i could supply /stock original leads if i wished.
Steves comments are spot on, if you're not worried about the condition of the leads in a couple of years time (maybe you are selling the car) fit standard.

Dont dismiss the shrouds either.. .. ..two of mine were shot when i checked, and with a set of magnecors from (I think) ACT, they were only an extra £2.00 each

kim
Edited to add.. .. ..
Sorry, just got home and checked, i got them from Motorsport World in Strathaven, not ACT. My mistake.

Thanks for all the comments chaps.

I intend keeping the car for the foreseable future, so I guess that the Magnecor's will be cost effective for me in the long run.

The pretty colour will be a bonus

Are you talking about the plug cap extensions?

I had a terrible crackling misfire above 5000rpm for the first 1½-2 yrs of ownership and everyone said it was just the soft rev-limiter kicking in at ~5k before the proper 'hard' rev-limiter at 6k-odd.

Recently I had the car in for a service and was told that my HT leads were perished and heat-damaged and should be replaced, so I gave the go-ahead.

When I picked the car up, after it was properly warmed up, I gave it some welly and promptly wound the tacho round to over 6k rpm and hit the rev-limiter (ie. the mythical 'soft-limiter' had gone).

Proof positive that HT leads can make a world of difference.

I have to say that the standard leads look really weedy - like bell wire (I'm exaggerating, obviously) so when finances allow I may consider the Magnecor ones.

Did you change the plug cap extensions as well?

As Tim said, heat is the enemy.
If you need to change the leads, the plug shrouds or extensions will probably need changing as well.
£7.95 each plus VAT if you stick with crappy Landrover leads or £2 plus VAT each if you fit Magnecors.A saving of £55.93 in my reckoning!

I have a set of Magnecors on my Track Car after pulling the ends off the cheeper Halfords/Rover one's. I think if you are pulling them off every weekend like I was go for the magnecors they last a lot longer. Still never noticed any extra power.

Just my 2p worth.

Changed my leads and plug caps at the service on advice from Austec, you could see them breaking down at high RPM when it was on the rolling road. I guess the ones that were on there were the origionals.. Wow what a difference pulls better and stronger up top than ever.. Have just ordered new rotor arm and cap + coil as well just to make sure ignition system is 100%..

Yes, they protect the leads from manifold heat
