Afternoon gents, my pipes have baked oil on them, I'm wondering if it would be ok to wet and dry it away, will that effect stainless? Also the underside of my tail pipes are pitted really bad from a trackday, sharpe edges, could I rub them smooth and get to 2000 grit to buff them?
Thanks in advance.

Why do you think that's oil, I would go for melted paint and grime from the bottom of the car.

Yeah, I assume that they're stainless and not just plated chrome or something so sanding them back and properly polishing them will work fine smile

Cheers Spaceman, well the engine used to chuck out oil literally allover the place, just assumed its oil.

More fun then.

Try just cleaning it off first if you don't want to go through the hassle of polishing the entire thing, leaving it in something acidic will probably clean it up. Stainless is a pig to polish, it's not just like alloy where you can buff it until it shines, you end up burning miles of wet and dry before you're happy with the result.

I quite like rubbing things! So many pits in the tail pipes I've gone right back, that's just the start!

You're crazy if you're doing it by hand, you'll have blisters as big as that Y piece before you get a mirror finish biggrin

Sheel popped by, Clive's Y is a thing of beauty.

I'm not only going to get a mirror finish I'm going to waste an afternoon doing the rest of the pipe. Pointless I know but I like renovating metal! It'll be dark again in a week but hey!
If you'd seen my tail pipes up close you'll see why I've had to take it back, loads of sharpe pitting marks. It'll look the nuts eventually!
