Having real problems getting the folding section of the roof off.

There appears to be 3 vertical bolts which are accessed from the boot. The middle one I can get a socket on the nut but there's no obvious way of gripping the top as it's obscured by the bottom of the screen. The other 2 I can't even get a socket on due to the angle.

The door cards and dash were awkward but nothing compared to this! Any suggestions appreciated.

Throw the socket away and get an open ended wrench + a wife. Send wife with small hands into the boot to simply hold the nut with said wrench. Meanwhile, go round the front and get into the car. Turn up the stereo. Put a cphilips bit in a battery drill and unscrew said bolts from inside the car.

Close boot. Remove roof. Open boot. Remove wife. Close boot. Have a cupa tea.

Release wife from boot after finishing tea in peace & quiet smile

out of interest has anyone taken any photo's "in stages" for the roof removal
this may help a lot of us as and when it has to be removed

Unfortunately this is the one thing I didn't document during my rebuild. Its pretty straight forward though really
1) unplug curtosy light cable which is under the carpet flap behind the passenger door.
2) unscrew the two philips screws (1 on each side) on thelower fiberglass section.
3) remove the 3 remaining central bolts as described earlier.
4) remove both Allen bolts from the upper hoop and lift the entire roof upwards and off the body.

When I did mine I cut an open ended spanner down to about 2 inches so I could get access to the front bolts thumbup

Thanks. Novelty for her being in the boot without being bound.

Still no joy though - I guess you mean the 3 horizontal bolts which are on show in the cabin at the base of the folding section? No probs with them, it's the 3 vertical ones that you can't see the top off and just spin. I'm not sure they are present on the later cars, I whipped the roof off in 5 mins on my 97.

On the early cars there are five bolts they are old gutter bolts the heads are glued to the fibreglass moulding three are in the boot central and one either side then there are two one over each wheel arch they are just accessible from the boot round past the filler but best way to get at those is to remove the trim inside at the rear of the door remove the glass fibre carpeted panel that gives access to the door locking mechanism then the access over the wheel arch is much better I also remove the seats for my comfort chances are if it is original figment they will be half seized glue holding heads won't hold so just rip the roof material of grind off bolt heads remove moulding then replace bolts with new stainless variety.

Thanks John. Didn't know about the ones over the wheel arches. Trouble with ripping the roof out the way is that it's nearly new, I'm only removing because the car is getting painted. Real PITA.

All of the above!!
When I had to remove my roof to have a new window fitted, I installed five of these

Now I can remove the whole thing in 5 mins single-handed.
