Agreed, sounds like a battery past it's due date.
They will (jump) start and continue running providing the alternator is working.
The other thing that commonly causes the engine speed to vary slightly but suddenly is the cooling fans kicking in.
There are some 'fixes' out there for it, but it is normal, and all cars will do this even when the entire system is 100%.

All the hallmarks of a stuffed battery.

I saw a while back a 072 Enduroline with a 600+ CCA and 4yr warranty for considerably less then a Halfords 072. I don't know if its Halfords mark up or if their batteries are genuinely better.

Are GSF still doing a cash exchange on old batteries? I managed to get a Bosch silver for about £70 after giving them my old one.

I just fitted one of these AGM batteries. Fits in the battery box nicely and spins the engine over lovely n fast. Terminals are on the opposite sides tho but hardly a problem.

I may be a lazy sod, but when I wasn't sure that my problem was the battery I went to my local battery place. They used their big tester which said "duff battery" in technical language. They installed an Exide Excel battery for around about the same cost as buying one online and doing it myself. I just watched. And made sure they got one with the correct terminal orientation (exide's own guide was wrong).

Never had one single starting issue since.
