I want to know what your cars are like on bad roads, going slowly around roundabouts with patches and bumps in the tarmac. My car rattles in these situations... it`s awesome on actual roads at higher speeds, but going slowly isn`t fun.
Is the only option to change all bushes? Any typical culprits? I have 55* miles on the clock. Engine mounts new, droplinks new.
Theres also the rattle in my NS window, especially when its halfway down. I tried adjusting the rail it goes down in but no happiness. Do I have to change the whole rail or can I take it out and filt it up??
cheers from Oslo

Worth getting your TVR guy onto it.
I had a strange noise at low speed, coming from low down behind me, like full bottles clonking together - TVR guy realized that my handbrake cables should be cable tied to the thing they are next to.
Problem is some rattles can be a sign of something dangerous.

I'm my own TVR guy since there are no Tivs in Norway. I have a garage with a 2 tower lift and I'm handy. Maybe i'll just have to get under it with a crowbar and jiggle stuff, check for hanging things etc. I noticed some cable ties had snapped the last time I was under to clean and waxoil.I had a strange noise at low speed, coming from low down behind me, like full bottles clonking together - TVR guy realized that my handbrake cables should be cable tied to the thing they are next to.

Hi Ole, I'd agree they don't like the slow bumpy stuff, over time I'm replacing all the joints and bushes etc. just to try to get the car more absorbent. Cable ties removed or fallen off will make pipes etc rattle off the chassis rails. To my mind at 56000 miles my car is just about ready to replace all bushes. I've even got the exhaust rubbers!
If I eliminate any looseness then rattles, knocks should be easier to find.
I'm doing the front end first and it will be interesting to see if I succeed.

Going slowly is never fun, take those roundabouts quicker and problem solved Is the only option to change all bushes? Any typical culprits? I have 55* miles on the clock. Engine mounts new, droplinks new.

Most of my rattles are exhaust related as it's been on and off so often in the past few months, still haven't figured out how to make the tailpipes sit completely level. Ocd madness
The other rattles are from inside my head, pushing a cotton bud through my ear hole sorts that out though

I have seen that done by an expert. Its very technical.

He just grabs both tail pipes, ideally with the engine not running, and twists them hard.s p a c e m a n said:

Loosen the downpipe to exhaust system clamp, get someone to twist the tailpipes level and retighten clamp, simple!

Our car is as tight as can be underneath with new polys all round, new ball joints, new nitrons and leven drop links but still I experience exactly the same at low speeds on poor surfaces. It was fixed for a while by tightening the drop link nuts but now it's back even though the drop links are still tight. As Ole Vix says, it's fine at higher speeds.

What tone does the rattle have? The usual metal on metal sort of sound, a deep clonk, or a higher pitched "full bottles knocking" sound?KateV8 said:

in the process of locating had the middle tunnel taken off. i am not sure for 100 percent but it seems something touches the frame exhaust or whatsoever. it will also be present at higher speed but the exhaust note is louder that the rattle so you won´t hear it. solution would be only drive fast

the next days will take the exhaust off to check the clearances or if any cable or connector is loose ....
once the car is stone cold fresh out of the garage there is no rattle at all. only once warmed up. there is a high chance it is exhaust related....

I am told that rattles are usually the exhaust, clonking is usually something loose.
My "milk bottle" noise looks like it might be that the cable ties that held the handbrake cables in position have broken, causing the cables to knock against the chassis/wishbones just behind them where they go out laterally to the rear wheels. They only do this at low speed, because they are pinned against the chassis/wishbones (sorry, cannot immediately picture which it was) by the faster airflow at higher speed.

I also suffer from low speed rattles and knocks from underneath, I've done the bushes and droplinks which improved it for a hundred miles or so then noises returned as everything settled, still running on original dampers so that's the next thing to replace, but not holding out any hopes of curing it so best to drop it down a gear and increase the revs
