hello guys, im in the process of changing all my suspension bushes for poly items after my chassis rebuild, the ploy bushes for the wishbones are approx. 51mm long and are fitting well, except the one that goes between the upright and the upper wishbone. The gap appears to be about 54mm, so the centre pivot of the bush is nowhere near the sides of the wishbone.

The car is an early 93 model, were these a different size?

any help appreciated.

There should be a washer goes either side of the bush to fill the gap at each side to the wishbone.

I made up some metal washers, dont use the plastic ones that come with the pollys, to fit in that space. You dont want that joint slipping and sliding as its your camber adjustment.

should the centre metal part of the bush not be tight against the bracket like the others are?

You want steel washers that have a hole that's snug on the bolt shank and thick enough to fill the gap either side of the metal bush sleeve. If the sleeve was just longer, its clamping surface would be insufficient against the slotted face of the wishbone; the washer acts to increase the clamping area. If there's sleeve protruding either side of the poly bush, then use the teflon/nylon packers between the steel washer and the poly to support it.

You'll need a washer directly under the bolt head and the nut too (ie a washer either side of each wishbone surface).

not on that bush, there's supposed to be a washer either side of the bush

This yes

Yes yes it should. The metal bush sleeve must touch the inside surface of the mounting bracket, thats how they are designed.

In simple terms the length of the sleeve, and the bracket on the wishbone should be of equal length.
If the sleeve is longer than the bracket, then use teflon/nylon washers to equate them both.
If the sleeve is shorter than the bracket then use suitable steel washers to, in effect, lengthen the sleeve, to an equal length as the bracket.
