I've come across this a few times when reading about head modifications.

What does this actually mean and what are the benefits?

Carefully ensuring all of your combustion chambers are the same size (volume) while maintaining, as near as possible, identical chamber shapes.

This should assist in ensuring equal compression and power output from each cylinder, which will further ensure a more balanced output and therefore running characteristics.

Knowing the chamber volume is also critical in calculating final compression ratio of course.

Thanks Goaty. Makes sense now.

Also useful to know the combustion chamber volume when upgrading your heads - 400 engines are fine with 28.5cc chambers, but 500s need 33cc chambers or the compression ratio is far too high.
