As tittle suggests I witnessed said MBGGT Ripping around Brands today, 1st place and so god damn fast.
I didn't know you could get an RV with a cross plain crank let alone 400hp + and a small air pipe, disi etc, revs to 8500 with ease, ferrari's racing but the 1972 MG was by far the sweetest sounding car all day and the guy ragged it to within an inch if it's life.
The engine,,,,, does anyone know of these cross plain cranked RV's?
Thanks Alun

Hi Alun,
Do you mean the RV8 had a flat-plane crank? It has a cross-plane by normal design including the usual performance deficiencies (uneven exhaust firing and heavy counterweights). There have been flat-plane racing versions by Repco and possibly others but they are rare. I would also be interested to know if these engines, or conversion kits, are available.

Assuming Alun meant flat plane crank;

I know of a flat plane crank RV8 that is being built.
Had a look at the internals. Nice components. Custom billet crankshaft, and a very special camshaft of course.
Sorry but I forget the planned displacement.

I have to say that for my own part; I don't really get it, aside from the engineering challenge standpoint.
While spending a small fortune on an RV8 for the sake of retaining your original engine is one thing (TVR owners being a case in point); to take what is a less than great engine, spend a fortune to achieve moderate output (by modern high performance standards), then shove it in 'some car', seems a bit crazy to me.

If the end game is to produce a bucket of power, there are far better choices than one of our old RV8s.
Just looking at the cylinder heads alone makes me wince in pain at the poor (high performance potential) engineering.

Of course, Alun is referring to an MGB, so that falls into the same category as our madness for using the original engine.

If anyone is interested, I could make enquiries with the engine builder as to where he acquired his flat plane crank and cam.

Gordon Bennett, sorry chaps yesterday was a very long day.
Flat plane crank,
I just didn't know it was possible on an RV8
As is obvious I haven't a clue, I'll read up on the principals, MGBGT fastest lap time of the day in Quali,52 something.
MBGGT V8 53's, in race
Ferrari's 56's,
Mazda MX5's 56's
Different tyres etc but bloody eck.
I hope the class he was racing will appear again and I'll have a good chat with the guy, he'd built the engine himself. I haven't got the race program but in sure his name was Mc Carthy but I can't be sure without checking.
Some driver, top class bloke and the engine was the best sounding thing there and by far the quickest. I agree entirely how old our engines are but they still have something about them that's very exciting.
It was great to see it going so fast.
Oh I've just remembered, he revs it to 8500 all day long, fantastic.
It's ok Goaty I was just wondering if it was a one off, he was very busy so didn't ask him to much.
If anyone wants to explain flat plane cranks their welcome to. Al

Ask and ye shall receive;
Flat plane crank?
Quite informative I thought.

£2,959.75 yikes

IMO you would have to be barking mad to pay that for an RV8 crankshaft.

His is the mgcc bcv8 championship. We used to race there!! Yes still 3.9 (allowed overbore to make approx 4.1 if rules still same). There are a few flat plane crank cars there now and yes rev to 8500 (some even more!). Russ McCarthy it a top bloke, his late dad Roy was also a.cracking bloke and one of the firat to make a.flat plane rv8 engine work well! High power but.a little less torque (but everything is top end of revs). Cam is bespoke on them, but heads are full race as per normal rv8 to my knowledge? Same as we run in dtec really! Crank and cam costs a fortune though! Sound lovely but not like a rover....

That's the chap, yeah a top boy, you guys are very competitive. So what do you think that little lot cost to put together, hilarious as it looks like a standard motor. The brakes are also very good, he really knows how to set them MG's up.
Thanks for clarifying that ctdave.

No worries. Card from ground up can cost a fortune but can be reasonable too!! Dont think independant suspension conversions are allowed, but telescopic shocks can be used. Www.bcv8.co.uk is the website for championship which should have all regs on. It was (when we.raced in it) one of the cheapest forms of v8 racing about! Personally I still prefer looks of big arches/slicks but thats my opinion...

I was up against this bad boy on Saturday http://johnwilsonracing.com/the-car/ not a flat plain crank but still a monster.

had him off the line, but a 3rd corner spin robbed us of what should have been a cracking fight. Not sure what they weigh but they are pushing out about 50 bhp more than my stock griff cranked 5 ltr..

Well well, it's as simple as that, thanks Bill I've leaned something today.
Less counter weights so revs higher, also allows for a smaller (shorter)lump, gravity.
I want one lol.
